idk if this is the right place for this… but how would I go about reducing or removing lag from matchmaking? Is it possible to ensure a good connection?
Not that I’m aware of , but if it is on your end, try limiting the other devices that drag on your bandwidth, if your using wireless try going back wired. Other than that stop searching low pop lists or to late at night when your more likely to get matched oth players further from you.
I think having an OPEN nat helps. Also having your ip static instead of Dynamic helps.
Port forwarding the Xbox ports into your routers configurations.
Open NAT
Port Forwarding
Wired connection
Reducing bandwidth (turn phone off wifi, put computer in sleep, or at the very least make sure they aren’t running/downloading anything)

That and having your networking equipment be fairly modern and having up-to-date firmware. I had a friend whose connection would constantly drop him out of games, and it was remedied by simply buying a new router to replace his older one.
Hardwired connection. Good download/upload speeds. Good router.
Provided your router isnt just crap, wired being faster is an urban myth imo i hear it all the time. The packets are flying half way across the planet thru thousands of core switches/routers and people think the major hold up is 30 feet of air between them and their router? i dont buy it.
The most substantiative things you can do are
Live in glorious peoples republic of America.
A rating on pingtest.net
atleast 1mbps upload
open NAT
ICMP reply enabled
In that order.
OP - There is a few steps you cna do to open your NAT. A forum member did the simple thing for players and created a thread for it:
How-To-Improve-YOUR-Connection-And-Open-NAT
I’d recommend taking a look at it.
-Close all Peer to Peer applications.
-Open NAT
-Insure all your internet devices are disabled.
-Set priority to your Xbox if your using a wireless routing device.
-Make sure your ISP is not sharing your connection over a local area, a lot of ISP’s do this to save money for themselves, if they are invest in a new ISP.
-While configuring your router take a look and make sure no one is leaching on your connection, if so, think about setting up a stronger password. Wep are easy to crack consider using a WPA TSK encryption.
Going from WiFi to ethernet cable made a HUGE difference in game play. I used to get tons of lag and was getting very frustrated. I finally went out to Best Buy and got an ethernet cable long enough to reach from the router to the XBOX and now it works 100% better. I haven’t noticed any lag since getting that cable.

It has nothing to do with wired being faster.
Its just more secure and provides a better connection, which can lead to it being faster. But that doesn’t mean its a substantial gain.
Its just more of a making sure you have the most secure, reliable connection.
Which isn’t always the case with wireless.

It also protects you from connection interference by other wireless devices.

LMAO. Wired is most definitely better, more reliable, and has little chance of interference.
Upgrade to a Dual Band Wireless 802.11 N router with a high GHz, multiple ports and a high mbps to ensure the best connection.

Interference can be dealt with, put your router up high, dont shove it down behind your desk, move to a different channel, play with your tx powers, get a small 6dbA directional antenna etc. It comes under being responsible for making sure your equipment isnt awful and is set up properly, theres a program called inssider that is great for scoping out your local wifi environment and making channel adjustments. You cant just throw your setup together and then complain if it doesnt work properly. However if you truly have an interference problem outside of your control then a ethernet cable is recommended, but this should be quite rare seeing as consumer radio equipment is mandated by law to accept interference without breaking and not generate too much interference itself.
Under reasonable conditions, i maintain that generally recommending wired over wifi is more like snake oil than good advice.

Use wired internet. Also try 2 have open nat. Lag will be created with foreigners along with people with distant and crapping internet. Ex. Californians, Alaskans and Hawaiians. All mexican,Dingo, Brits and other foreigners will create ,lag if your in usa (uh duh).
If u want least lag, play with kids in your own state/counry.

Look, even if you can possibly fix any problem or always have a good connection. Wired is still recommended for the optimal settings.
Wireless speed decreases the further you get away from it.
Signals can be intercepted.
Wireless has low security compared to wired.
There is no and,if,or,but about it. Wired will always be a better choice than wireless. The gain isn’t always substantial or even noticeable, but when you are using wired, you KNOW you are getting the best. You don’t have to download programs, you don’t have to make sure everything is working fine.
Plus not everyone is computer literate. You seem to think that just anyone can tweak around in their wireless and know what they are doing.

You may be right, if someone has a problem with their wifi and they dont even know where start, maybe they should just plug a cable in. Then again, wifi problems are why guys like me get paid.
You overlook that in order to get a not even “substantial or even noticeable” gain (definition of snake oil btw), you now have another cable running across your floor. Thats the downside. Theres a reason why wifi is so popular.
Anyway this thread is now OT and i feel like im arguing the toss, so peace.

In terms of speed. Not security and I said you may not notice or even have a substantial gain in speed. There are many factors that can effect speed, like distance, signal, interference, etc. Which obviously all of those don’t effect everyone.
Yes, wifi is convenient. Its popular because it reaches further than a cable, removing the cable from the factor. At the cost security, reliability, and possibly speed.

Bye
Connect the Ethernet cable directly to the modem, and call your ISP to up your speed.
And if you’re using Comcast, don’t.
