Easy. Merge the aspects that both types of players find appealing in each of their respective gun of choice. The end result? A 5-shot burst, 5sk, 75 round (or 15 burst) rifle, I’ll call it the CR, or Combat Rifle, for now.
One trigger pull fires a 5-shot burst, but if the trigger is held down, the gun will continue to fire out rounds at the same ROF. So this appeals to the fans of automatic fire, because you’ve got a weapon putting out a lot of rounds automatically, but then the weapon also functions as a precision weapon because you can fire it in bursts and it picks up headshots.

> Yeah.
Won’t work.
You’ll end up with a weapon that either services neither group or services one while spitting in the face of the other.
Look at the Retro from Gears 3. That is what the AR should be. Brutally powerful rifle but crap all for accuracy that forces burst firing at any significant distance and that reduces it’s long range effeciancy. If you gave it a Lancer reticule the gun would be retardedly overpowered and if you gave it the Lancer’s power at close range it would be destroyed by the Gnasher. If you half and half it it becomes a weak weapon that is strong in neither area.
I think the AR just needs a bigger mag like in CE and does slightly more damage… like 14 bullets to kill someone at close range? that way it outmatches the BR (I think) at close quarters, while the BR outmatches it at longer ranges…o.o…?

K. Doesn’t really address the roots of the problem in fact that makes it worse. With the AR BR situation, you normally should want to upgrade from the AR to the BR as you get better. The whole situation would be avoided if instead of upgrading weapons, you upgraded your own playstyle. Instead of spraying into their chest, you learn to hit your shots and get headshots. Learning to use your main gun better seems like it makes more sense than having to get used to one gun, then forcing you to learn a completely new gun and nothing in the game makes that clear that it is better.
Lets take the DMR, and Assault Rifle in Halo Reach. They both use the same rounds. Which means they both would do the same damage. So if the DMR can kill in 7 shots. The Assault Rifle would to. But do to balancing reasons the Assault rifle can do half damage. Si it would take 14 rounds for it to kill. So the AR can be the other half of the Precision Weapon.
Precision Weapon: Damage: High. Can kill a shielded Spartan in 7 shots. Mag size: 15-30 rounds. If it’s a 3 round burst weapon. It will be 30. If it’s semi it will be 15. Rate of fire: 3 round burst like the BR. Or semi automatic like the DMR. Affective range: Medium-Long. Accuracy: Vary high. If you pace your shots.
Assault Rifle: Damage: Medium. Half of the Precision Weapon damage. Mag size: 30-60. Rate of Fire: Selective: Make the AR act like an AR.
-5 round burst.
-Automatic. Affective range:
-Automatic: Short-Medium
-5 round burst: Medium-Long. Accuracy: Low-medium.
-5 round burst: Medium.
-Automatic: Low.

Easy solution?
The CR beats the CR at mid range if the user is skilled.
The CR beats the CR at close range if the user is skilled.
Nothing off spawn should be able to encourage camping. Power weapons doing that are fine, because you have to fight to get them, but not off spawn, that = bad.
so err… why not just put in a thing where you hit left on the D-PAD you change the fire rate from full auto to 3 round burst just like battlefield 3… sure it takes out creativity in the game, and makes it less fun but watevs makes you happy bro :3…

How does it encourage camping? If you go for the PW’s and you have a BR and an AR on you, then when you see a guy at midrange you take him out with your BR. If your in close quarters, maybe in a small room or corridor, then you switch to your AR because its (it should be) more effective. But if you end up in a close-midrange battle you should be able to win with the BR if you use it right, just like the AR could win if used right.
I like the CombatRifle idea too, if you check out the Halo2 E3 demo the BR was similiar this. It had 3 round burst when fired from the hip, and single shot fire when it was zoomed for accurate mid-long range engagements. So I would like to see a CR that used that zoom mechanic.
AR starts need to go away and never come back. BR starts should be the only gametype outside of specialist playlists like Snipers.
If you don’t like the BR (or aren’t good enough), then use the AR. If the matching system works properly you should be matched with other bad players who don’t like the BR either. Spawning with just an AR and no mid-range capable weapon suits bad players just fine but as soon as you play players who will maintain map control and weapon control then you are screwed, all because you spawned with a useless gun. If everything is AR starts, it sucks to be good. If everything is BR starts, nothing changes either way because bad players will still use the AR.

You dont understand how a sandbox works, do you?
Its not a question of AR or BR, its using both of them in their niche, not “noo0bz yuze aR an PROZ haz Brs”.
The BR is a mid range weapon. The AR is a close range weapon. The BR should have a slight chance of beating the AR at close-mid range, but only if it gets the first shot or they the AR user fails at firing at you in time. But at midrange, the BR should win most of the time, unless the BR user cant aim and the AR user knows what he’s doing.
The AR should be able to:
1:dominate at close range
2:compete at close-mid range,
3:lose at mid range all the time
The BR should be able to:
1:dominate at mid range
2:compete at close-mid range
3:lose at close range most of the time, but not all the time
But I support the CR, only if it is like he Halo2 E3 version of the BR
In its current state, the AR is a niche weapon. If you play against opponents who have more than 8 brain cells and you spawn with an AR, you have 2 options: you either wait for a BR to spawn or you die. That’s it. AR starts leave you vulnerable from spawn. Bad players won’t see this, though, because they never face up against competition which is good enough to take advantage.
I just want the AR to stay like the the AR in Halo 3, of course with a slight damage and range bump. Maybe even just take the AR from H3:ODST, but with a slightly different sound and fire rate.
> > Exactly. Everyone is happy.

> Nope.

> If it’s just a NR with burst it’s not a CQC weapon. It’s a mid-long range weapon with burst and a full auto function. It’ll lack any CQC capacity.
How would it lack CQC capacity? You shoot people with it and they die. It won’t outclass the shotgun at close range, but then nothing does anyways. The BR replaces the AR in general usage, which made AR users sad because AR was fully automatic and they liked fully automatic. In this scenario, you have a weapon that can function fully automatically, fulfilling the desires of AR users, while basically being the BR.
> You are the one who doesn’t understand.

You didnt even read what I put did you? Its not AR or BR, its BOTH. They need to be utilized for their own range. You start out with an AR and BR. If you see a guy at a distance, use your BR. If your close to an opponent or your going through a close quarters area like a room/building with hallways or something, you use the AR. Is that too difficult to understand?
