Hunters are very, very strong. Those titanic (and magnificent) monsters are as resistant as large. But the most interresting in them is their shield.
Yep, what is in their left arm is an immense and nearly impervious two-part shield of several centimeters thick, that is made from the same material that forms Covenant warship hulls and weighs approximately two tons. The shield corresponds to half the weight of the beast!
But, we don’t really know how stronk is this beautiful (and scary) equipement.
can it stop the bullets of a sniper rifle? The shells of a tank ? can it deviate the laser from a gauss gun?
And in the lore, how strong is this shield presented ?
Honestly, I really don’t know, but it seems to take some damage if only minor. Can it stop a tank? Doubt it. Whenever I shoot a hunter’s shield in Halo 5, they still fall pretty quickly. Not sure what the written lore has to say…
It’s weird, in the Halo games you can shoot them with a tank they die. But in Halo Wars those shields can be seen blocking Warthogs and deflecting Railgun tank shots.

Gameplay balancing for the most part. Canon wise, a tank is a good answer to a Hunter because the shell it fires is explosive; even if the shield stops the shell, the blast wave will still pulse through the gesalt like a brick wall.

I was also going to bring up in the Return, Marines shot rockets at a Hunter and it died.

Yes, they did. Explosive weapons work rather well against them.
Also I think Chief blows one up with a LOTUS mine at one point.
All I know is that the Hunter’s armor(and their shield) is made of a material stronger than any humanity has ever discovered, and people really have no idea where the Covenant got these materials.
They’re made from the same materials as Covenant battleship hulls. There’s you answer. No projectile outside of a MAC or mass driver would be able to pierce it in lore. A tank shell wouldn’t cause much damage to the shield, but the explosion and impact force would kill the hunter.
Plasma however is a different story. In First Strike, concentrated plasma fire kills a pair of hunters very quickly. Not even Covenant battle armour can withstand plasma.
So aside from individually pulling enough Lekgolo worms out to kill it, explosives are the only way.

I dont think it went through the shield, the Hunter put it down, assuming this is the same instance I’m thinking of.
Also, this is the same book that noted Hunter had “spines”.
Yes. The amalgamation of worms had SPINES.
(and that the UNSC Marines used “Semper Fi” as their rallying cry despite being not the USMC…) so take it with a grain of salt.

No it did, I’d need to get the scene and find my book

I know and I don’t really care anymore. there are larger inconsistencies that bug me than a phrase (that never bothered me, or hell even noticed) and something that I’d love to have retconned. and no, I won’t take it with a grain of salt either, it’s canon no matter how silly it may be (AND HOW EASY A FIX IT CAN BE WITH JUST A SIMPLE RETCON ADJUSTMENT OF THE SCENE)
