How should the stalker rifle function?

Since we have [indirect] confirmation that the sniper weapon used by the Banished is called the ‘stalker rifle’, how would you like it to function in-game? It seems to look more like the focus rifle from Halo Reach, but I personally hope it’s not as weak as that gun. At the same time, though, I don’t want it to be identical to the beam rifle (which has always been an uninteresting weapon to me). Any unique ideas?

Focus rifle, weak? Interesting… I’ve always been quite a fan and thought it filled a good niche as a suppression weapon and even anti-materiel to an extent (canonically I think that’s what was used on the turrets during the Battle of Netherop IIRC.

My sense is the stalker will either specialise more for shield stripping and suppression (maybe even a slow/stun mechanic like CE’s Plasma Rifle). I think it’s main competition in the sandbox would be the sentinel beam

It looks like the Focus Rifle, so maybe it will function in a similar way

i would think it fires spikes because [brutes] that can supercombine and stuff or at least mini explosives like the nornfang from halo 5 but less overpowered

I think it will be something like Needle Rifle like in Halo Reach.

Not sure if you saw the Beam Rifle thread from earlier, but I’ll paste my assumptions on how the Stalker rifle will operate.

Looking at the stalker rifle, where the carbine’s magazine was located, there instead seems to be a scope. If that’s the case, then we’re looking at another battery operated banished weapon which I personally find exciting because that further pushes the boundary between human and alien weapons. This weapon has vents, which leads me to believe it may have a charging mechanic or possibly a venting mechanic tied to it similar to the Banished Ravager.

The Ravager draws a lot of parallels to venting the heat of Plasma Repeater in Reach, which while I found that gun incredibly redundant, that reload mechanic was very interesting and I’m glad it’s returning. From what we’ve seen of the ravager, the heat builds up and doesn’t seem to dissipate, meaning players either vent early or deal with the overheating animation, which is unique and interesting for the weapon. It’s damage output (and maybe tracking?) seems ridiculous though, I wonder how that’s going to pan out in PvP.

I’m thinking this Stalker Rifle we see may be a longer range weapon that has a charge and then release mechanic similar to the railgun, or the Linear Fusion Rifles from Destiny. This is all speculation, it may well just be a battery operated gun as well, but all those vents have me wondering. Either the charge system, or I bet we’ll be able to dissipate heat similar to the Ravager and Repeater. This game’s sandbox has me so excited I’m actually willing to overlook my personal problems with movement mechanics because damn, these guns look fun to shoot. Crossing my fingers we see the Brute Shot return, specifically the Halo 3 one, as I live for those rocket jumps.

I imagine it will play something like the Embar from Gears 4+, meaning it’s an electric-sounding sniper with a charge up. A railgun with hitscan and a bigger scope. I think this would be a great way to balance jackal snipers in these games, give their guns a glowey charge-up so you know when and where they’re gonna shoot.

I’d see it like the BR where if you zoom in it can be long ranged but if you’re unzoomed it can function close to medium range.

Pretty sure there won’t be any spikes. That’s because brutes never liked to use long range weapons. They want to see the enemy dying. Snipers just don’t come alonh with brutes well, it’s more a thing for jackals imo.
