Should he settle down and retire, probably find someone and start a family? Or should he sacrifice himself in some way, either fighting to the very end?
Personally I think the big man has been through more than enough, he deserves a break.

If I had to guess, I will say that 343 Industries will finished telling Master Chief’s story in a similar way like how Kevin Feige and the Russo Brothers finished telling Captain America’s story in Avengers: Endgame. I think we might see Master Chief passing the baton to either Jerome-092 or Frederic-104.
Well, however it goes, I hope it goes reverently and in a way that Halo fans will respect. “Passing the baton” like Tan suggested would be a very nice way to go about it.
He chokes on asparagus.
He should kill all the forerunners and stab himself with an energy sword, then after chaos swallows whatever planet he’s on, he can move onto norse mythology.
Made me laugh harder than it should. I hate asparagus lol.
he should retire and start training new spartans
In a blaze of glory.
I think he should retire to mentor new Spartans, when the time comes. I like the parallels of Chief being mentored by Johnson in the early days of the Spartans, and then Chief turning around and assuming that position. I do think Chief’s stories have a lot of life left though.
That is why I still think that Master Chief is becoming a mentor in the Halo main storylines going forward. Because Master Chief is already an experienced Spartan in the Halo Universe, it makes sense for him to train a new group of Spartans in future Halo video games.
Unless his business value dries up, his story will continue.
Maybe other characters will be the protagonists of the story.
However, in order to make it a key factor for fans to pay again in the future, John 117 will probably only MIA.
I think a large scale fight escalates, the Flood return, humanity hides inside a shield world along with other alien species who simply wanted to stop fighting. Master Chief stands before the controls of the Halo, waiting for it to fire after he’s activated it. He removes his helmet and pulls out a very familiar coin with a man and an eagle on it. He smiles as Halo fires, killing the Flood and all other enemies. Humanity, specifically John, helped repeat history. We essentially ended up right back where the story of the Forerunners ends. By igniting the rings.
I just feel by coming full circle with this event would be the best way to also end the series.
It should have ended in Halo 3 with John 117 mia. That was the most fitting an end for the Chief. And then another olive drab clad Spartan 2 should have been promoted to the rank of Master Chief; someone new who is essentially the same.
But since that didn’t happen, I think the only other option is a VERY dramatic and public kia at the hands of Mr big-bad-n-hairy himself.
You guys remember the old Simpsons, right?
