How should 343i explain expanded universe?

Numerous threads in the forums have dealt with people asking why thinks look different or why are people suddenly “just showing up” in the new Halo universe. For those who only play the games I know this can be frustrating because I was there. I didn’t know much about Halo’s backstory until only a 2011 or so when through my own whim, I decided to read the history of Forerunners on some Halo wiki. I spent a few hours and even then I still didn’t know nearly half of the lore. That was 2011…

After Halo 4 and the beginning of the new Saga, we know have a whole new sub-class that is possibly larger in background then the Covenant. We also have Blue Team, which isn’t much but on top of the already confusing plots introduced with Halo 4, it can get annoying.

Point is I barely manage to keep up-to-date on the lore and for someone playing Halo 5 this fall coming from Halo 4 it will be confusing. So how is 343i planning on relaying what has happened and what we need to know before starting Halo 5? They currently have a visual story planned for retelling Fall of Reach which will explain Blue Team but that is only for those buying the Limited Edition or higher. I love Halo but I can already see issues appearing with Halo 5 having to introduced so much to many players.

In my opinion 343i needs to have a lengthy opening Cinematic explaining what has happened over the past few months in the universe with Master Chief AND The Elites and Covenant (or whatever they are called now). Locke had Nightfall but that story wasn’t really telling of anything other than Locke’s character. Osiris should get a brief explanation for all of their characters somehow because aside from Buck we don’t know anything other than their names.

Halo 5 is definitely shaping to be the biggest yet but like any large universe, it needs a good exposition. LoTR had a great exposition for the first movie that set the tone of the rest of the trilogy. Halo 5 should really try to aim for the same.

I can imagine it opening it up a la Star Wars:

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away…

It is a period of war. Human colonies
have started disappearing, apparently
under attack by Forerunner weaponry.

During the events, Master Chief Petty Officer John-117
has seem to activate these Guardians,
armored metal beings with enough
power to destroy an entire planet.

Pursued by ONI’s sinister agents like Princess
Locke, who races after Chief, ordered to kill him
in order to save his people and
restore freedom to the galaxy…

Employing a primer, i.e like FF XIII-2, would be a good way for 343 to introduce EU elements for the unfamiliar. You know, avoid another Halo 4 and all.

The only obvious solution is grimior cards…LOL

man destiny is garbage

They should really have like a DBZ flash back opening.

ON THE LAST EPISODE OF HALO…

Or something like Mass Effect had, like a library/chronicle thing that you can open and whenever you come across it in-game it’s explained. Which you should be able to go back to whenever you want at leisure. I think that’s still a great system, of course a good prologue can help too.

design a more coherent narrative so it isn’t confusing, only employ the expanded universe if it can be conveyed without the kinks

“PREVIOUSLY ON THE WALKING DEAD…”

Seriously now, they should just add a good prologue or an explanation somewhere down the campaign (a la Librarian encounter in Halo 4, but better in terms of actually explaining what the -Yoink- is going on!).

I think it’s something they could do as the game goes on. Make reference to something from the expanded lore to explain what’s happening and let those who want to look into more do so. I don’t think 343i need to re-explain everything in game

Have a timeline à la Halo Wars, but instead of bulks of text that deters the casual gamer, make every point on the timeline a short, narrated video in the design of the terminal videos, thereby also showing off characters, structures, planets and any other type of design. New videos could unlock after finding the respective terminals in H5G for spoiler reasons.

Why not both?

Here’s an idea;

opens up with master chief, events of halo 4 in mind

(this keeps the players who played halo 4 connected)

(suddenly other spartans) People: think Who are they?

One of them says: “I haven’t seen chief press himself like this since we were boot camp.”

The audience immediately understand that they know chief, and since they were both in boot camp, they trained together.

“He’s fine fred.” Says another one. So now we know the name of the person that spoke first. And that The person who just spoke to Fred knows him, AND chief.

“This many missions non stop isn’t fine.” So they know he’s been on tons of missions, or they all have been on tons of missions. They fight together, they must be equals somehow to roll with the chief. Also since he can judge something is off, they are close.

(chief speaks and reassures that the person in the cockpit is indeed master chief.
Chief enters the room with the other spartans.
The female spartan hands him a weapon, and he addresses her not only by name but informally. They know each other.
At this point the audience is fairly sure they all know each other.

Fred addresses chief on a personal level. And chief reacts accordingly.

To me this trailer highlights that they’re capable of conveying story without complicating the plot.
Halo 4’s opening cinematic also shows more than 1 master chief so the audience can at least use common sense and figure out its not multiple Master chiefs but multiple Spartans.

There’s plenty more that can be addressed but I think it’s in good hands.

Thank you, couldn’t explain it any better! Was also wondering the same, but not anymore

Brilliant
That trailer explains a lot and you don’t really have to pay that much attention, I don’t get why people need every minute detail explained
