In several levels of Halo 3, you are tasked with taking out anti-aircraft wraiths to clear landing zones and even for the small-scale strike against the Dreadnought, which ended with failure. We’ve seen how powerful they are against Hornets, Longswords and Pelicans, however, as far as I know, we’ve never seen the damage they can do against starships. Given that we are tasked with clearing several in Voi to let the frigates and Longswords attack Truth, and clear two for a landing zone on the Ark for the Dawn they have to do some damage to them, but how much? Can one or two AA Wraiths take down an entire Charon-class light frigate?
I believe Voi was Longswords and frigates.
So The AA Wraith for the Longswords and the AA gun at the end for the frigates.
As for against Starships, The AA wraith has a shot against low flying Longswords. So Frigates will probably survive them, if the wraiths can even hit them.
On the Ark, Forward Unto Dawn had to land so you can see why AA would be a problem.
But how much damage would the two on the Ark do to the Dawn? Could they destroy the thing if the Dawn was that close?
Covenant Had a Verity of AA assets for different roles.
- Type-52 Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AA wraith)- Type-27 Anti-Aircraft Cannon as seen in halo 3. The T-27 was used during the Battle of Voi. One battery had been deployed in the town of Voi in order to keep the UNSC forces away from the Portal excavation. The UNSC planned a low-level strike, using Frigates and Longswords, to attack the Prophet of Truth’s Forerunner Dreadnought. MC eventually destroyed the AA gun, allowing Lord Hood’s ships to assault the Forerunner Dreadnought. From this we can gather that the are indeed a threat to star ships- Type-38 Anti-Aircraft Cannon seen in reach was also destroyed to allow Charon-class frigates to conduct air support with out risk.in-terms of destructive power the later two are classed as ultra heavy plasma cannons and fire in a similar fashion to that of a covenant corvettes plasma turrets reference halo Reach.

And every single one of them was blown up because of an exposed core… way to go Covenant.

And all of them were heavily guarded by large amounts of infantry of high ranks- chieftains and generals. I doubt they were expecting marines to break that kind of defence.
Problematic enough to be a threat, evidently. I’m curious about the wraith’s effectiveness on aircraft, considering their fuel rods are incredibly easy to dodge.

Well they were able to take down a longsword and hit one of two pelicans so they must be dangerous

A light aircraft =/= a full-blown frigate with several centimetres of Titanium-A battleplate. Alas, I have never actually seen an AA Wraith take down anything other than one of those hornets on The Storm that just hovers there for ages. I’m unsure what a Wraith would pose to any kind of fast-moving aircraft, and judging by it’s range, any kind of warship that isnt trying to land. The full-blown AA guns that fire a shot akin to a. actual ahip-ship weapon are another story, but the OP specifically mentions the AA Wraith, and that thing was pretty useless.
The guns that take down Pelicans, Falcons and 'Swords are full AA batteries/ artillery, and are permanent emplacements rather than a light, mobile tank with a slow moving projectile that does fairly minimal damage.

Keep in mind that there’s probably some gameplay balancing in there.
Canonically, it’s possible that the AA wraith shots travel much faster or perhaps each plasma blob has a larger area of effect.
Honestly they should make the “AA-Wraith” their MBT, the thing is absolutely devastating against ground forces if you can get into it.
I think in the case of the dawn though they didn’t want to have the thing damaging their anti-grav/landing gear.
The AA Wraith in itself would probably do only minor damage to a frigate, however the UNSC forces inside the Dawn had to land, so you can see why the area had to be secured.

Gameplay strikes again.
