I know that Halo was very popular a decade ago. I’ve been told that it was way more popular than today, is it true? Was Halo the most popular FPS? If so, which one was second place? If not, which one was? When did CoD become the most popular FPS? Was it before or after 2012? Can you give me an example where Halo was perceived as the most popular FPS, like millions of people watching RvB or everyone going crazy before Halo 3’s release? Do you care about this? I do not, but I want to know your thoughts.
Well Halo has been awaible only for Xbox, when CoD is released on every console.
I think that CoD became most popular FPS in 2007 when original Modern Warfare was released, I think that it sold lore than Halo 3.
CoD was in it height during Black Ops-MW3, 2010-2011 atleast then it became more popular than Halo.

Well Halo is the only reason why the xbox exists today. Halo 3 was so popular that there was a decrease in box office sales when it relased. Halo 3 had over a million players on the day of release. Halo 3 was also the most played game on xbox for about 2 years straight (same with Halo 2). Halo was the most popular game on xbox until Halo Reach and 343 took over. Halo was infinitely more popular when Bungie created Halo than it is now and that is a fact. Halo 2 was the best selling first generation xbox game. I think Call of Duty was second to Halo, but then it came ahead when Halo 3 was 2 years into its life span and they released a new Cod. Halo 2 went into second place of most played games on xbox after gears of war launched. As you can see Bungie’s Halo games were actually good which is why they were so popular even 2 years after the game released. Halo 5 is not even in the top 15 most played games on xbox in less than 2 years after launch. Halo 4 had a massive population drop too after launch. You can’t argue that 343’s games were more popular because then you would be ignoring undeniable facts.

When Halo was first released it didn’t have any real competition. Halo Combat Evolved invented the “Virtual Couch”, And this franchise did something that almost no franchise can do, it caught lightning in a bottle for not only three consecutive games, but the first three games. You seem to forget that Bungie made ODST and Reach, neither of which had the reception of the first three games, even though they are good games in their own rights.
You’re also comparing the gaming market across time (which believe it or not, changes), instead of comparing each game to its contemporaries at the time of its release. If you’d done the latter, you’d know that Halo 5 was the single best selling game on the XB1 for a long time after its release, and it was also credited for causing a lot of XB1 sales. Current Halo games have a lot more competition than the old Halo games did, and these competitors are getting more similar to Halo games, reducing the options to improve gameplay in a manner distinct from other franchises.
The quality of Halo games has remained consistently high, prompting people like yourself to inflate your expectations to the point where they can’t be met, because they aren’t rooted in reality. A game not being the massive phenomenon isn’t proof of it not being good, as you suggested.

Halo 3 Odst and Reach were spinoff games , so they don’t really count. If we took into account 343’s spinoff games we would make the conclusion that Halo is completely dead and no one plays it anymore based on the fact no one cares for the spinoff games as much. The whole idea that Halo is not doing as good because it has more competition has been debunked (Link). Halo has lost its identity, that’s why it’s not doing good. What ever happened to the slower paced gameplay? Halo now is more like Call of Duty than Halo. What ever happened to the awesome soundtrack that was instantly recognizable as Halo? What ever happened to the beautiful and iconic art style. How has the quality of Halo remained high? Where was split screen at launch, where was btb, infection, king of the hill, juggernaut, assault, oddball, forge, action sack, griffball, multi team, firefight, playable elites, team snipers, and many more at launch? How can you tell me , with a straight face, that Halo has retained the quality of the previous games. Halo Reach has more content RIGHT NOW than Halo 5 . It also has better graphics and lighting than it. Why are their micro transactions in a HALO game! I can go on and on for days about how Halo 5 isn’t even Halo and how it isn’t 1 percent of HALF of the quality of even HALO CE! How would anyone in their right mind would say Halo 5 is a quality game, or even a quality HALO game. I don’t remember a single track from Halo 4 or 5’s soundtrack. I remember almost every single track from the previous games because they were so iconic and good. Halo 5 is not a quality game and it’s a DISGRACE to Halo an a slap in the face to all real Halo fans.

What is a “real” Halo fan? Am I not a “real” Halo fan because I like 343i’s games as well?
If you don’t remember a soundtrack, that doesn’t mean they are bad. I remember the soundtrack from every Halo game I’ve played.
Halo 5: Guardians is a good game; it may not be as popular as Halo 3, it may have fast paced gameplay, it may not be the most played game on Xbox Live, there may be better games. But in the bottom line, Halo 5: Guardians is an amazing game, that sadly couldn’t met the “real” fans expectations.

The thing you linked me to literally has a graph showing that Halo 3 had a population of over a million at the beginning of release, and an article whose link is on Wikipedia also says the same thing. You’re telling me Halo 3 , a game that made over 300 million in the first week, didn’t have a population of iver a million in the first day.

Yes, even though Halo Reach may have had higher numbers at launch, it didn’t last that long. Halo 3 was the most popular Halo game.

Yes but it had a massive population drop because of how the game played, ( it was a Call of Duty ripoff).

He could’ve just paraphrased the Wikipedia article: “The game drew over a million Xbox Live members to play online in the first 20 hours”, which is an accuracte statement. The usual misconception is people thinking the game had over a million players simultaneously at some point in time. So, until he clarifies, we should probably give the benefit of the doubt.
It doesn’t help that, as we noticed here, people usually talk about population in a way that makes it ambiguous whether they’re referring to peak population, or 24 hour user counts.
And while we’re on the topic, I might as well toot my own horn and remind that the thread in my signature has some data and discussion on the historical popularity of Halo games. While it does not tell anything about the popularity of Halo in relation to other games at the time, it should give a reasonably accurate picture of how the popularity of Halo has progressed over time since Halo 2.

You’re telling me Halo 3 , a game that made over 300 million in the first week, didn’t have a population of iver a million in the first day.

Was people dissapointed? Angry? Or simply they didn’t really care? I like Halo 4. Do you like Halo 4?

A lot of people were disappointed and I think a lot of people were angry too because they didn’t like how the game changed with the addition of sprint and load outs. I don’t really like Halo 4 mostly because the campaign because I didn’t like the story and how they were trying to make master chief talk more ( I think it ruined his character), but I also don’t really like the multiplayer as much as the previous games. I mostly play Halo for the campaign, so I didn’t really like 343’s idea of trying make master chief more human. I also didn’t like how they changed the art style. It’s fine if you like the game I was just saying that Halo isn’t as popular anymore because the drastic changes that are being made to it. Sometimes I just go on a rant when I’m bored lol.

No. And I don’t know the answers to your other questions. Although I do vaguely remember people going crazy before Halo 3’s release. But that was before I cared about Halo, so it just got on my nerves, and I remember wishing everyone would shut up about it, which is how I feel about every overhyped video game release that my friends tell me to play even though I know they will just get bored of it after a month, themselves.

Halo Reach doesn’t seem like a spinoff game to me

Yeah please don’t start with that “real Halo fan” stuff

Well if you played any of the original games and you actually read my post you would understand. Halo 4 and 5 aren’t halo games.

I did both of those things. But ok, if your own personal definition of “Halo game” doesn’t include 4 and 5, so you therefore think people who like those games are actually not fans of Halo, then sure, carry on. Those are your own definitions of “Halo game” and “Halo fan”, so it’s fine if you wanna do that.
But it might start a flame war if you don’t word it carefully, and remember the fact that many people probably define those things differently than you do. After all, when somebody likes a game and you tell them they’re actually not a fan of it, that tends to be perceived as insulting.

That is not true, they are significantly different from past Halo games, but they are still Halo games. Saying otherwise is like saying that TLoZ: BotW is not like past TLoZ games because it has no music on the background.

So if 343 makes Halo 6 an exact copy of Cod Black Ops 3 , but it has the title of Halo 6 , is it a Halo game? If you take out the very things that made Halo unique and so well received by many people and try to craft it into completely different is it truly the same game?
