Low diamond here. Playing ranked, and the match was lost, but my score was a 21 KDA.
Can someone please explain this goofy ranking system? It makes absolutely no sense. What are the rules to rank up? What are the rules to lose rank? It seems entirely random.
You need to win to rank up, but how much you rank up depends on performance. My issue is that I’m getting absolutely clapped and not ranking down so the past two days I’ve lost 80% of my ranked matches.
Well your team lost the match in the first place but what kind of match was it, slayer? If it’s any of the other ones you can get as many kills as you want but if you’re not helping with objectives which ultimately results in a team loss then you need to focus less on just kills. People who play the objectives can also score higher than you if you don’t do any and just go for kills too.
343 hasn’t disclosed exactly how the rank system works yet but I believe it’s based on wins, personal performance (kills and objectives), and comparison to other players in the match based on their score and/or rank. Like if you’re diamond and beat a bunch of gold players you’re not awarded as much idk.
My scenario: I was at the bottom of diamond 1. I don’t often play ranked, unless there is a challenge I need to complete. The last ranked game I played was a loss, I think.
First game of the day: I have a horrible negative K/D in CTF, but we win. I progressed a smudge forward.
Second game of the day: I have a positive K/D in Oddball, and we win. I progressed almost a third through diamond 1.
Third game: My K/D was close to neutral in Stronghold, and we win. I progressed to a little above half way.
Fourth game: Horrible K/D in Slayer, and we lost. My progressed dropped to less than halfway.
Now, I know I said a lot without telling you anything, but my theory is that you rank up quicker with the more consecutive wins, and your performance has little to do with it. If performance is calculated in, then it’s probably how you compare to the rest of your team.
It depends on who you were playing against really. If the game matches you against lower skilled players it expects you to win and punishes you for not
Others are claiming you can lose and still rank up based on performance so idk about that. I know it’s shown my bar increasing after a loss before. I’d imagine it has to be a mix of win/loss, quality of opponents, how the game expected you to perform, and actual performance.
Would be nice if 343 actually published something on this - don’t think they have.
AFAIK they are using TrueSkill2 (mentioned in an Inside Infinite article) which was used in Halo 5 and had a published paper describing the system. I believe you can read it if you search online…it is Microsoft’s proprietary matchmaking system. It behaves the way I described so if people really are ranking up on a loss then it is a different system or a glitch. I personally have not ranked up on a loss yet.
