Yes

I´m pretty sure everything Bungie wrote down, and was you know, like legit lore, everything its legally owed to 343, so i would said everything…

So bungie lore is no longer relevant?

  • Halo Reach is no longer a hard-retcon of The Fall of Reach. - All sources are equally canon, generally speaking, with new sources trumping old if there’s a conflict. In essence, a book can trump a game under 343, where as Bungie was always “games are the final canon”. - The Halo 3 terminals are no longer considered an accurate story, but a story altered by a rampant AI’s recollection (so true, but not accurate, if that makes sense)That’s the main stuff that comes to mind. Some people will try to said 343 changed things so that Forerunners and Humans were no longer the same species, but Halo 3’s terminals clearly established them as separate species well before 343 took over. In fact, 343’s lore notes that there is some kind of genetic link between the two.

Yeah I always knew forerunners were different species to humans. In fact I think it was bungie themselves that scrapped that idea. I think they originally were going to make them the same but decided to make them different.

I loved reading the terminals in Halo 3, something very cryptic and mysterious about them. Was kinda disappointed to know that 343 changed it that mendicant bias was telling lies or giving misinformation. How come they did that?

So it’s not that MB was telling lies. The stories told are true, they just aren’t 100% accurate. You could think of it as MB leaving out piece of context for the sake of telling a more coherent story. Does that help?

Ah right I understand now. That’s does clear it up thanks

The Brutes and Elites initially weren’t discovered by the UNSC until 2552 in the Fall of Reach and First Strike, which they changed in later editions.

As a general rule I think retcons should be kept to an absolute minimum; 343 has made up a lot of contrivances to make Reach and Fall of Reach work together, but to wipe something away as non-canon is a pretty dangerous precedent. Nobody wants to read a book only to be told it “didn’t really happen” after the fact.

And this is why I LOOOOOOOOVE Halo fiction. It’s pretty much all connected. I mean look at Star Wars. They could have gone down the same path as them. George Lucas (Bungie) create something everyone loves, the Original Trilogy (Halo 1, 2 & 3). Then the Prequels were made (ODST and Reach) and some like it and some hate it. Rights of the franchise were sold to Disney (343). And sequels were made (4 and 5).

Buuuuuuuuuuuut…Disney said that 3 decades of books, novels and video games that expanded the lore (and George Lucas approved of) don’t count. I am SUPER thankful that 343 Industries did NOT do this with Halo lore. Instead they fixed or tried to fix issues left behind by Bungie (Halo: Reach and Halo: The Fall of Reach). I mean yeah, Halo is complicated. But you can gather it all and learn from it. Whereas Star Wars now you gather it all but you gotta take out huge chunks because they don’t pertain to the lore anymore.

Thank you 343 Industries for keeping it strong and bound together. I know it’s not easy. But you’re still pulling it off!

343 has actually mad more things canon, and have been trying exceedingly hard to make sure all (or as much as possible) lore makes sense and connects.

A lot of the Star Wars EU wasn’t that great; personally I only ever liked anything written by Zahn and Luceno and the X-Wing series. Not to say the current canon is great (it has a few really good stories but a lot of fairly boring material), but I didn’t complain when the original EU was no longer canon. Some good characters have come back like Thrawn, Bane, Revan (in name only, so far), etc. Lucas may have approved of the EU during his ownership but the man didn’t read or care what was made. He had no hands in that. Besides, all that doesn’t mean you can’t go back and not enjoy the now ‘Legends’ EU that we have. The stories are still there but have no effect on the current canon (although even the Solo movie referenced material from the Lando books). The old EU hardly affected much of the mainline series anyhow; I do like how the current canon is much more linked to the films and shows, even if overly reliant on them for the most part.

You’re in the minority then. I’ve not met one person in real life who likes the fake EU. They arent continuing the Legends, so all the characters I knew and loved are gone, and that keeps me from enjoying the EU because I know I’ll never see them again. Hopefully, due to the less than stellar reception the movies made, they will think twice and maybe bring back the EU to canon.

Aside from making Reach and Fall of Reach work together not much has been changed.
