I played online with someone in doubles today we won 10/10 games and i placed Onyx 1700 yet he placed Platinum 6. I did not expect that huge of a difference in our placement rank since we played all placement games together.
Your previous season’s ranking is the #1 thing which determines your rank after your placement matches compared to others you played with. My assumption is that last season you were ranked higher than your teammate which would account for the difference in your ranks.
maybe, i thought him beating the same people would increase his rank though. Then again i dont know what rank he was the season before.

Yeah if you both started from a clean slate (as in brand new profiles) then you’d rank the same after playing the same placement matches, but as it currently works, the placement matches basically just determine where you should be placed compared to your previous season rank.
MMR, as far as I know, only affects who you match with/against. Placement is dependent on CSR; that is, the CSR of your opponents, your CSR last season in that playlist, and of course the CSR you gain/lose during placement (win/loss ratio).
Its been awhile since I’ve read the distinction between MMR and CSR and what each affects, so my answer may be lacking.

I think MMR has to do with all matchmaking whereas CSR is strictly Ranked Arena.
How come if your MMR decides you should be playing high ranks you will sometimes still place low in your CSR
I was going to link all the threads that Josh talks about MMR vs CSR, but it’s getting late and I need to go to bed. However you can trace it more easily here. I started this quite a while ago, and I try to keep up with it. It’s a lot of information , and I was hoping to consolidate it a little more.
If you get tired of trying to read through this stuff I would say your best bet is to ask Josh in the most current MM thread he has started. He has kind of cut back on the number of responses he gives, but it’s worth a shot. Plus, he is very active on his twitter.
The little I remember your MMR and CSR are fairly different. It might help to go back and look at who you guys were matching up against. You also said you didn’t know what your friend was at the end of last season. It might help to find out. The placement matches are going to pit you against slightly more difficult opponents than where you left off, and then go from there. Basically comparing your ranks to your friends rank doesn’t really work since you both have a different MMR history.
Finally, that thread will really help if you have the time. I wish I could be more help. It’s been a while since I read through it all, and some of it I still don’t quite understand.
Good luck. I hope this helps.
You guys are gaining the same (or close to the same) amounts of CSR per win in placement matches. Given that there’s always been a gap between your ranks in the playlist, that gap doesn’t get any smaller when you play together, regardless of the competition, because, as mentioned, you’re gaining the same amounts of CSR per win.
