I have not followed Halo as long as some. Started only exploring the expanded universe when I got a Halo: Reach Limited edition box. and found out there was a whole other world.
This post mainly comes from what I’ve seen parts of the community express since Spartan Tanaka’s reveal which was disappointing to some for some reason, the death of Black team and complete absences of Spartan-IIs and IIIs from the continuing narrative since the last 72 hours arc.
I can sort of understand why 343 is introducing new characters. To those like me that only used to play the games there is no expanded cast beyond halo 3 as… they are all kind of dead. but the same is not true to the expanded universe. members bring up names from older books like Spartan 3 Lucy (my new Fav) and I find myself hunting them down.
Is it that the greater community just wants new characters and are just unaware of the old ones in the expanded universe.
only old characters to make a resurgence is Buck and Romeo with other dying off-screen.
Well I don’t think I can name ALL active Spartan-IIs but I do know a lot of them.

I’m with you there. If the only story you know is what you’ve seen in the games, I will blow your mind with EU knowledge. But I probably won’t be able to remember every S-II and their service tag.
I’ve read every book, comic, watched all the movies, and have played every game made so far. I cannot name all the SIIs but I think I have a good understanding of what’s going on in the universe.

Last time i checked there are 11 active spartan - II i can only name Jai, John, Kelly, Linda, Fred, Adriana, Naomi and… Mike! I forget whose in Red team aka spirit of fire.
There is clearly a divide in the fanbase and it does make me sad when i hear fans say Palmer and Ray are the best/coolest Spartan females when characters like, Linda the most lethal spartan with a rifle, Kelly; fastest and 2nd most cynical spartan that ever was, Adriana; eastern European blond goddess and Lucy; the only 5ishft spartan III to crack Halsey on the jaw are alive yet sidelined for the “343 breed” of Spartans.

I never took the time to read every book and comic, so others are certainly more informed than me. However, I have played through each campaign numerous times and because of my campaign experience I spent a lot of time on Halo Wikis hunting down information about characters, previous historical events, planets, species, etc. I’d say that I’ve procured quite a bit of knowledge from just taking time to dive into the lore.
So I read most of the books (haven’t read the last book in the forerunner trilogy or kilo five trilogy, but read the plots online) and I don’t read the graphic novels, but again try to keep up with it by looking it up online. So I know more than the main narrative, but cannot name all Spartan II’s. What do I choose?

You cant say your mothers pie is the best when you haven’t tried anything else… its not a fully formed opinion. This is what im talking about.
Point being Palmer and Ray are the only ones getting any exposure and with the majority fan base unaware of the others. If Kelly was throwing down instead of locke in the gamestop trailer or actual had some story eliment outside of a paper back novel… i would have nothing to say as this would be equal taste test. Like i said there is a divide.
We have still yet to see what Halo 5 brings…
I feel like my EU knowledge has started to slip a bit. I couldn’t stand the Forerunner Trilogy and read Halopedia to make up for it. The use of comics to continue the story isn’t my favorite but I still feel like I know more than most.

Curious as to the divide if anyone can explain… I’m only see the one with those that only player MP and those that seek out terminals in story mode and are some what versed in halo EU?
@ Dirty Rascal who is the most 1st most in your opinion Cynical Spartan? (I haven’t read all the books yet but love this kind of stuff)
Being a Halo forum, it’s safe to say that many people here will fall under the first and second option. Generally people here on Halo WP are huge Halo fans, whether it be for campaign, multiplayer, or both; and as a result the results will be skewed.
I’d be interested in seeing what the results of this poll would be if it were asked to a more diverse survey sample of gamers that play Halo.
I used to be really big on the expanded universe material, but after the Forerunner trilogy I totally lost interest, and everything since then has been downhill
