To my understanding, all of the new weapons in Reach that weren’t in Halo Ce - Halo 3 were lost on the planet Reach. That is why they weren’t in the first three Halo games. They were lost forever. There is probably a story behind the occurrence of the DMR in Halo 4, but I haven’t been able to find one. If anyone knows the story, I would love to hear it.
Maybe the UNSC started making them again. You know same story as why the Spartan Laser was in Halo 3
i say we make up our own story, like if it was stuck up an elites -Yoink- and we found the body
Evil just can’t be stopped when it’s this bad. LOL, I love the DMR so it’s going to be funny as hell on this forum. But I’m curious on the back story as well. Sorta like how the Dinobots are Dinosaurs on Ancient Cybertron.
Actually, generally the DMR is army and BR is marines, and technically, they are the exact same gun.
Well I know the DMR was decommissioned after the fall of Reach and replaced with the BR. That’s story the story progression of the DMR as I know it. Dunno maybe they’ll explain it or not. Either way I’m not to worried about it.
My guess.
During the war with the Covenant, the UNSC had to cut costs, maybe the DMR was one of these cuts.
Like . . . say we go back to the Vietnam era. U.S. soldiers had M14’s, M16’s, M60’s, etc. We stop supplying soldiers with M14’s because M16’s are just cheaper to produce.
But now, since the Covenant war is over, maybe the UNSC is reintegrating the DMR into their armory.
Or . . . and here is my favorite . . .
Because reasons.
In the past, the DMR was standard in all Military branches.
When the BR came, the only Branch to not adopt it was the Army.
It is possible, that the newer model of the DMR fixed some of the problems the other branches had with it and are now reincorporating it.
The DMR in Halo 4 looks like a different model than the one in Reach.
So, if the model is different (most likely newer), than that would explain why the DMR is being used by the UNSC because it fills a different weapon niche.
Reach wasn’t the UNSC’s only planet where they manufactured arms. Data on all the research and technology that was being worked on could have easily been backed-up and used to continue research and development on said weapons and tech.
I don’t see why the UNSC would ever let it go. The DMR provides excellent marksman capabilities with more mobility than the 50 cal. Think of it like a Dragonov or some of the enhanced versions of the m14. I imagine the UNSC would find this to their advantage when sniper teams have to be on the move a lot. The armory probably began manufacturing it after the war. It can be so useful.
In terms of gameplay though, the mobility part doesn’t count. I was speaking canonically.
The DMR in Halo 4 is a new and improved version, maybe UNSC saw the shortcomings of the BR (mid-long range accuracy) and decided to update and upgrade an old faithful (DMR) to fit the modern battlefield. It’s done on a daily basis, most guns are made based on previous models, evolution not revolution.
Because it’s awesome, that’s why.
From a story perspective, the BR serves as an alternate service rifle alongside the MA5 series. The DMR is…well, a DMR, and thus more suited to obviously related roles.
Here’s you’re answer:
Its been 4 years 7 months and 10 days since the end of Halo 3. Humanity is no longer in war time and it’s been said that when humanity is not fighting a war, their technology becomes better and better at an exponential rate. It’s almost been 5 years, whose to say that in this time they haven’t gone back to some of the glassed planets and colonies and collected data from those worlds. I find it hard to believe that in 5 years they were not able to remake the DMR and make it even stronger than its original model.
Im sure humanity has a million other issues it faces currently, but bringing the DMR back is not s big deal when dealing with the Halo cannon.

To answer the question in the topic, “How is the DMR in Halo 4?” The DMR is in Halo 4 because 343i put it in. If you asked why the DMR is in Halo 4, that would be something else.
*Grammar -Yoink!-
-
Manufacturing continued for training Spartan IV’s more extensively.
-
Case file classifying the weapon ineffective could have been overruled for any reason. It’s no different when a new gun suddenly gets approved for owner usage within a state. Things always are changing.
-
Lack of proper resources/feasibility is now good.
I have a bunch of other possibilities which can occur in the open or behind the scene’s.
they weren’t lost forever, they were in service long before reach. The M293-DMR was the predecessor is to the BR, and the M295-DMR is the successor of the BR and equal of the Heave Battle Rifle variant.
It’s not like the DMR was some experimental weapon that only Reach had; it was standard-issue across all branches until the BR55 came around.
The DMR was largely decommissioned by all military branches EXCEPT the UNSC Army after Reach. This is when the Battle Rifle took over as a more effective replacement and became standard issue. No, not every weapon known to man that didn’t make it into Halo: CE-3 were destroyed and lost forever. There are a lot of human colony planets. Just because Reach was the main military planet doesn’t mean other planets didn’t have armories and the same technology.
