Since the dawn of Halo DLC, wise and all knowing forumites have been devoutly preaching to all that will listen that it is “impossible” to add new armor to any Halo game because of the file structuring and whatever else. They said that to add new armor permutations we all would have to download every single map in the game and that it wasn’t feasible to pull it off on a grand scale. Long story short, every time someone would post up an idea for armor DLC it was promptly shot down by these codemonkies who were sure we would never see new armor in-game.
Now that we are officially getting new armor, skins, and all that stuff that wasn’t already coded in-game the tide of these posts seems to have subsided. I find myself wondering what happened, did the developers find a miracle code breakthrough and decided to whip up some new toys or were the naysayers actually wrong every time they slapped our hands for reaching out for new gear? Does this mean they can just code in new weapons and vehicles at any given time too?
Sorry if this is an old topic, I looked around and didn’t see anything related to the subject.
Maybe 343 is just awesome. Or maybe adding in armor was always possible. In any case I don’t care how 343 pulled it off, I’m just happy there will be new armor.

Agreed, I was always one of those who would post in those threads saying “when it happens” instead of trying to dash everyone’s hopes. I really didn’t know if it was possible but I preferred to stay positive. The addition of Mark V is awesome, every Halo game except for Halo 2 and ODST Mark V has been my favorite. Though it’s going to be hard to pry this FOTUS off…
It’s awesome they listened too and added ODST back in for the legions of devoted ODST fans.
I am thinking it is possible that Halo 4 system works different than previous games. My theory is that before a game, all needed model files are taken from a “pool” that contains all the necessary 3d stuff, skins, etc. So all this stuff is not exactly on the map files at all.
Just how I think it could be possible.

Well remember that supposedly 343 released an unfinished game. With that being said maybe the new armor they are adding has been in the game all along and they are just now releasing it. That’s a thought…

If Mark V and ODST were in the game this whole time someone would have found them by now. People data-mine the heck out of games these days, it’s crazy.

Well then, im assuming putting new armor in the game had been possible all along. That or 343 has software that Bungie doesn’t have.
My guess is that they’ll make a big patch to the game, so that the armour files are in everyone’s harddrive, and those who purchase the armours unlock them, just like with new guns in BF3/blops 2, and player characters in Gears of war.

Or, more likely, which making modifications to the engine, they added in a loophole that would allow additional assets to be read from the game, even though they’re found outside of the .map file being used.
In the end, I don’t really care how it works. I’m just happy that new armour is finally possible!
I don’t think they ever said that about halo 4. Only reach and 3.
The multiplayer is installed on our hard drives, remember?
Ading armor has always been as simple as addserver=package<insert armor name here> and implementing it as a title update.

I swear they said it would take a massive TU to add any new armor or skins to Halo 4. I might be wrong, but I seem to remember seeing that somewhere.

Disk 2 is Spartan OPs. Multiplayer is all on Disk 1 i.e. multiplayer is not required to be installed.

It is required to download it as the .map files are on the disc 2.

That’s not true. You can’t play multiplayer at all without installing Disc 2. They said specifically that it would be for multiplayer. I’m pretty sure you could play Spartan Ops without Disc 2. (Not 100% on that.)

Oops, you’re right (got confused with campaign .maps)
Only campaign maps are on Disk 1. Multiplayer + Spartan Ops Part 1 are installed from Disk 2.
Saying that, what’s the big deal then? Delta patches for mandatory installed data is cake. The only preventative from patching armour into previous titles is that you can’t patch the on disk maps without making everyone install the game or download some huge update.
Why would anyone say armour updates aren’t possible if all the maps are local to the hard drive?
Let’s call it magic and just bask in the glory of Mark V
Its not like Recon in Halo 3 where it was already on the disc but was locked.
What I want to know is, if they already lied about adding additional armor, what else have they lied about? How come they can’t add CSR in-game if they can change the coding externally to add new armor and skins??

When did they lie about not being able to add armor in? I’m pretty sure there was no official word on if it was possible or not, just forum users who thought they knew how it worked. As far as adding CSR in-game, I doubt they “can’t” they simply don’t want to for obvious reasons.
Perhaps the armor data was always there, and somehow the DLC just unlocks it?
