How important is music in Halo?

I believe that the music of Halo is one of the most important aspects of the game. It stands out so much and is incorporated into the game far more than any other game. The music always sets the mood and tone of every situation so well. It makes sad moments feel even more emotional and scenes with warthogs seem far more intense and fun. Any time you hear a Halo song you can immediately tell it’s from Halo because it stands out so much and it’s so memorable. I sometimes listen to the music just on its own because its so good and entertaining. What is your opinion about Halo’s music? Feel free to disagree and think whatever you like. On a side note I feel as though the music in Halo 5 is actually very good. However it is implemented into the campaign very poorly. At times it’s missing music where it needs it or there’s music when their shouldn’t be or it doesn’t fit in. To improve the music and mood of the game they just need to incorporate it more.

I believe the music is almost, if not more important to Halo than any other aspect. I mean game play mechanics is probably number one, but without a deep soundtrack it would lack intensity. I own all the soundtracks and listen to them often, helps me get ready for what the day is about to bring lol. I love each soundtrack, the music makes the game much better in my opinion.

Halo music isn’t bad, but they could replace the whole soundtrack with polka and I wouldn’t mind.

Of course music is very important. The thing with Halo it’s about finding the right ingredients to make a great game, if the ingredients aren’t perfect then the game could end up being meh instead of a great Halo game.

The music in Halo is one of many things that made made Halo so unique for so long.

Anyone who says no, never played Halo 2.

I think its extremely important!
I think they should expand the orchestral and add in breaking Benjamin’s like they did in two! Pipe dream I know, I just felt like such a bad -Yoink- when blow me away started up in the mausoleum of the arbiter with the hunter pair

Much as I love a good polka… I’m gonna have to go with a no on this one. And thanks for putting the idea in my head - I may never be able to get it out now!

When Marty o donnel was around halos music was iconic and a great example of how to implement music that can also mesh with certain bits of the game. So many games these days just cram music just to have it that I just don’t care. When your soundtrack is so ambient, jumps in at the wrong time, or is so sparingly used, it really makes the game less interesting. Ever since Sam Hullick and Marty left their respective franchises, music quality has been a liability since. So ultimately I love every halo with Marty’s music (CE up to reach) but I have absolutely no care for what 343 has brought in for music cause it’s nasty, that H4 menu music isn’t going away anytime (and it’s not just the menu music in that game) and then remixing classic soundtracks in H5 shows lack of creativity on the current composers part.

halo 2 soundtrack is the best soundtrack of anything ever

The music makes the game. I miss Marty’s work with Halo. His soundtracks are Legendary

Music is important in all mediums when it comes to immersing the individual. Halo is certainly no exception.

Thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts.

I have a thread in the Nightfall section of the forums about just this. I felt it was one of the main reasons Nightfall never felt like Halo. It had its own score and nevr used the Halo music and the music is such a huge part of Halo.

Agreed…

Marty O’Donnel was one of the best composers I’ve ever heard, both of game music and all music. His Halo music, especially One Final Effort from H3, and most of the H2 soundtrack are superb, and his music for Destiny, when Bungie was still good, was breathtaking. I would sit in the Tower for hours to admire the scenery and listen to the music.

I listen to the Halo soundtracks almost every day, at work. It never gets old

VERY!!!

I know this is an old forum but I’d like to respond to this. Halo 4s music was much worse than five. Halo 4, from what I recall, never used the original theme which was a huge mistake! The final battle definitely shouldn’t have been epic orchestral. It should have been the classic battle music that we all love, thanks to Marty. But I think Halo 5 was great. There was a new epic theme which I loved and fit perfectly with this Osiris team. And while I battled, having the classic theme was good. I think that even though it is a new composer, it is important to use that theme we all know. That’s like saying that when the avengers movies had new composers, they shouldn’t have used the avengers theme.

I know this is an old thread, but I want to become a composer for either movies or video games in the future, and the music is essential in every video game. In the past, I have played games without music, however, the title screen would always play the title music and it always brings back the feelings I had when I first opened the game. Music and sound is probably one of the most effective way to bring back memories. Now, specifically with Halo, the original composer, Marty, set up a perfect tone for the franchise. Everyone knows and loves the Halo theme even if they haven’t played the game. It’s so unique. Marty perfectly executed making a sound that reflects the feelings in the game. I cannot imagine playing the game without that classic battle music. Arguably, I think ODST has the best soundtrack. A game in the same universe, but a different tone. You are no longer a spartan, but an ODST. The music reflects the loneliness and emptiness of the city when you wake up and explore. Now regarding Halo 4 and 5, there is a new composer, and I think the music is not as good in those games, and I believe that is a major reason people may not like those games.
