How I think the Boltshot should be balanced

Now I know there are a lot of posts about the Boltshot out there, but I haven’t read any like this (but of course I haven’t read all of them). If anyone remembers the Mauler from Halo 3, I think the Boltshot should be modeled more to it’s abilities. Recall back, a close range shot with 1 Mauler would take out shields, if you were dual wielding, it would kill and was fun to use. Instead of limiting the range, the Boltshot should have had a damage reduction where a fully charged shot would take out shields only; it still functions the same and you can only hold the charge for so long until it fires.

With that, it would balance the Boltshot to be closer to a Plasma Pistol in close range. I love the Boltshot and use it as my secondary a good deal. I can honestly say that after this TU, nothing really changed. I still kill people in 1 hit, I just have to hold the trigger a half second longer to fire.

This problem isn’t fixed because people who want to use it still will use it and just slightly* adjust their play style while using it. Changing it’s power actually would balance it.

The whole point of the boltshot is to make it a completely different gun than the plasma pistol. Making it a de-shield only weapon would not only defeat that purpose, but make an overall more useless version as a plasma pistol. A charged plasma shot can take out shields from both medium AND close range, and you can melee or noob combo right after for the kill. Why would you even pick up a boltshot?

At this point, with the TU nerf included, it’s not the boltshot itself that people have a problem with. It’s the IDEA of it being a 1sk weapon you can spawn with. I played a few hours last night and died maybe once or twice to the boltshot and almost every team I played against had users of it, one of those deaths being because I had already taken damage. I’ve also been killed with the magnum and the plasma pistol. A 1sk pistol would be a problem if it dominates, but thanks to this TU, it basically can’t anymore.

Maybe in Halo 5 if they bring dual wielding back, it could have that mauler effect, but until then, it has it’s role:

Magnum: Long Range
Plasma Pistol: Medium Range
Boltshot: Close Range
