How Halo Infinite can please the community

In order for Halo infinite to appeal to both new and old players and regain is relevancy there needs to be an effort to retain halo’s established identity while incorporating elements from the 343 era.

From my point of view the three most necessary areas to be considered are:

1.) Art Style/graphics

2.) Movement mechanics and gameplay

3.) Campaign/story mode

1.) The 343 era brought along a lot of changes to the art style not liked by a majority of players. For example some generally disliked changes are the “thuggish and clunky” look of the elites, changing of pre-existing weapons such as the rocket launcher in halo 5 and shotgun in halo 4/5, and changes to spartan mjolnir armor. The bungie era of games set an established look for enemies, weapons, and vehicles that are easily identifiable as being from halo whereas some of the new 343 designs are not as iconic or identifiable. I don’t suggest that any old art pieces should be copied straight into halo infinite because they’re “Nostalgic” or “iconic” but certain defining characteristics for weapons, enemies, locations, and vehicles should be identified and maintained in the newer games. for example the blue LED’s on the shotgun are a defining characteristic of the halo shotgun, snd this could be easily implemented and crossed with the 343 design of the shotgun. There are innumerable instances where this idea could be applied and I think this balance/cross of artsyle is perfectly implemented in the halo 2 anniversary multiplayer.

2.) There are fans of completely classic movement and advanced movement. I tend to lean towards the side of classic movement. “classic” halo required knowledge of the sandbox, the environment/map, and the use of different weapons the kill enemies in different engagements. Halo’s sandbox and map design along with its movement awarded good decision making and discouraged bad decision making. Halo requires a lot of thought and conscious decision making in game and I think most of the new movement mechanics eliminate this tactical nature of the game. For example you can sprint away from engagements and spartan charge around corners, and holding certain controlling positions on the map is no longer as important. That being said the boosting ability is the least game altering and I think would be a great addition to halo infinite. My ideal formala would be to remove sprint, spartan charge, ground pound, hover, clamber, and “ads”. I know ADS technically doesn’t alter gameplay but the old animation for zoom should return as it is more halo-esque. however the base movement speed of the spartans/elites should be increased, jump height increased, and allow for boosting and sliding. I feel as though this would cater to both sides of the fanbase and make for the return of the old halo gameplay which is proven to work. i.e.) don’t destroy the framework bungie has laid down, and don’t completely throw the baby away with the bathwater with what 343 has done for the game.

3.) As for the campaign, learn from the predecessors (halos 1,2,3,reach,wars,odst) and learn from yourself (Halo 4). I feel as if halo 5 was the only time halo really dropped the ball in the campaign department. That being said, identify elements of he story that make halo, halo and add on to it.

There are too many things to cover in one post but let me know what you think. I am advocating for change, but not Total overhaul. I want what bungie has created to be respected and what 343 has created to be respected too.

MIX BOTH ERAS, DON’T ELIMINATE ONE OR THE OTHER.

I can’t really find anything I don’t agree with in this post, very well written. Props to you!

I will say that for a great reference point for art style I’d look no further than Halo Wars 2. It is a perfect meld of classic styles with a fresh new look. Wouldn’t mind having more of that in Halo Infinite.

I think ADS became a thing because people thought it didn’t make a lot of sense that certain weapons couldn’t technically be aimed and you had to spray and pray with them such as the AR. I do believe this was another reason the Plasma Rifle was removed because there really wasn’t a way to aim with this weapon, it was purely a spray weapon (purely speculation on my part).

Personally, with the direction 343i has taken Halo, I don’t really know if going back to the roots of the old movement mechanics as well as removing several mechanics is going to be right. From an evolutionary standpoint, it wouldn’t make sense to make these Spartans out like highly mobile death machines in durable suits of armor and gel layer then strip that identity from them on a basis of ‘it doesn’t have the right feel’. Though I do believe that 343 probably should have tested these mechanics with the community well before implementation so this sort of thing didn’t occur in the first place.

I do understand that some decisions are made on the hopes that the community will receive these changes well and that they can’t just reveal it all to the community because that would ruin the ‘awe’ factor it might have carried if it WAS received well.

I also understand that a lot of people want Halo to feel like older Halo’s while feeling like a brand new thing that 343 is trying to uphold, but you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Sometimes things end up getting sacrificed for whatever reason and we can only hope it doesn’t make TOO big a difference in the end. I personally don’t mind the changes that have been made and still adore Halo for what Bungie made it to be while understanding that a new company means a lot of changes. Even if that company technically has been making the game for quite a while in the background. (From my understanding, 343i was basically just the part of Bungie that worked exclusively on Halo. They just broke off to make their own game company to continue the series once Bungie abandoned Xbox for PS to make Destiny.)

For me ? I want a game that’s fun, where I don’t have to grind and pray to the rng gods for the item I want. Give me a fun game with a good story, no rng and I’ll be happy. I’ve always viewed movement in games as something to adapt to. I would like a grittier look, and more blood and gore, Halo 5 was too clean imo.

I agree with almost everything there.

As of the demo trailer I’m pretty confident in the art style, from what we’ve seen. Looks like a mix of old and new which is exactly what I wanted.

For the gameplay mechanics I would also keep clamber. Sprint, charge, gp, stabilize, and the accuracy bonus to ADS can all go.

For story I hope they just keep it more focused. I didn’t think any of the plot points of H5 were bad but execution was messy, HW2 was much better, especially the Flood DLC.

a lot of good points here. gameplay wise, you can’t make everyone happy and I’m pretty sure 343 knows this so they’ll probably experiment with the gameplay a bit which I’m totally fine with as long as the trilogy halo is used as a base. they can do whatever they want with sprint, clamber, etc as long as they don’t get too ambitious which is where I think halo 5 went wrong, they kept trying to think of cool things they could add and ended up throwing in too much which got in the way of the simplicity halo has always been about. personally though, if I were to have it my way, I’d remove all the abilities other than clamber and sprint but sprint either having limited use (not quite as short as halo 4’s though) and then add back the equipment style items from halo 3 but with new 343 style versions like maybe a short range promethean teleport, might sound op but keep in mind equipment is one time use and still add a little spice to the gameplay without chaning the basic formula.

as far as story I think they need to spend most of their time on this, halo 5 felt very rushed. they need to find away to make the story deep and complex but not so complex that you need to have studied all of halo lore to understand it. complex enough to be interesting and immersive but simple enough to where it can be easily understood in just the game and on your first play through.

and when it comes to artsyle:

I strongly agree with this. hw2 has the ideal artsyle, like an evolved version of the classic designs.

Well first off, you’ll never please everyone. I think most people know this.

I agree with a lot of what you put OP. The art style definitely needs to be more how it was. HW2 is a very good example of compromise. It definitely has the old style art as influence.

Gameplay/movement wise might be the hardest area to please people. I still think Halo doesn’t need a sprint animation. It just causes too many issues and changes the game a lot. I would get ride of everything minus thrusters and I would look at a double jump that operates similar too thrusters in Halo 5. ADS DEFINITELY needs to go. It just isn’t necessary and adds absolutely nothing to gameplay. Also, according to a lot of hardcore lore people (that isn’t me) it breaks cannon to which also isn’t good. I would look at adding equipment again as I feel there are so many possibilities with it.

The story just needs to flow and be well written, that’s a gimme. I’m super tired of open world games. Almost every game that comes out now is open world. Keep levels!!! Just make them big and such where a player can explore or possibly go different ways to get to the same objective.

I would scrap the squad aspect completely that they used in Halo 5. I would make it more like Halo 3. If it’s just you, you play as the chief. If other people play with you they play as members of blue team. Blue team would still be in cutscenes and what not. So for example, say one level you have to go blow up some base. If it’s just you, you would see the master chief telling blue team to do x while he would be going alone into the base. If it’s you and your one buddy playing and say he picks Fred, in the same cut scene it’s now the chief telling blue team to do x while him and Fred infiltrate the base. Things like this.

I shouldn’t have to read the books or go to outside sources to understand everything either. I’m definitely tired of that kind of stuff. Little references here and there to past events is always a nice touch too.

I’ll also add that the music MUST be faithful to the original. Themes that we all know and love should still be used. It disgusted me how 343I change so many themes or just flat out don’t use them. The master chief “I’m going into battle” theme that was used in SO many tracks in 1-3 is gone. An example of this is at the 2min mark of the track Truth and Reconciliation Suite from CE or One Final Effort at the 40sec mark from Halo 3. Same tunes or ques are in the track, might only only for a moment but it matters. It’s like in the original Star trek or TNG, DS9 etc anytime the Klingons showed up that theme would always play even just for a moment or in starswars, anytime Darth Vader is even mentioned his theme is played even if it’s just for a moment. This kind of stuff is important!!! They need to go back to that. I think you get the point I’m trying to make here.

I would absolutely try and get Marty to do it. Whatever it takes. Give him complete rein over the project, drive a dump truck full of money to his house, whatever!! Don’t tell me things like he’s working on other things right now and won’t do it. People can be convinced if the right situations/offer comes around. It’s happened all the time in music, movies, video games, TV shows, everything!! Him being back alone would cause a lot of hype. I think people underestimate the impact Halo music had. I know it’ll be tough to get him, but I would try REALLY hard to get him back.

Just imagine that E3…“oh and one final thing before we close the show… We got this guy to do the music for Halo Infinite…” (que the master chief theme as Marty walks out on stage) the place would erupt!!!
