I have been a Halo fan ever since its beginning and I love the story and the series. The main thing about Halo for me was the relation between MC and Cortana and how they were always there for each other no matter what. Since Halo 6 will be the end of the triology for 343, I am really really hoping that they don’t end up making her the villain and MC having to kill her in the end. Too much has changed after 343 came in and for die hard fans of the game, the best thing would be to have Cortana’s redemption in Halo 6, either by the logic plague theory or that shes Guilty Spark or Didact OR SOMETHING !!! It was a good twist and 343 is killing us till Halo 6 comes out, so they have achieved what they wanted. Now the next twist should be a positive one because almost every die hard halo fan, including myself, is really hoping that we’ll get the old Cortana back again somehow and that the snap out of whatever she was thinking/being controlled in Halo 5. From halo CE, it all leads up to this and its one hell of a story and it’ll be a real shame if 343 decides to actually show that Cortana actually turned bad. It will be a horrible way to end the series and will live on as a disappointment forever. Everyone loves a happy ending and that is what will be remembered. I mean she sacrificed herself for him and he went to hell and back for her !!!
The connection between MC and Cortana is very strong and emotional. Making her the bad one and killing her off will just make players sad … players who feel the game from CE till Halo 5. Not finishing the fight with Cortana by your side make Halo lose its essence and becomes like another COD game. I’m sure 343 as the story teller know what they’re doing and are much more passionate about Halo than anyone else but I thought I should let them know how I as a person who’s listening to their story want it to end … wish it to end.
For me and the die hard fans who loves the story as a whole from CE, this would be the best ending … going back to the Halo roots which is the magic of Halo and what made it so special amongst millions of gamers despite so many FPS out there … finishing the fight with your trusty AI by your side … TOGETHER … HOW IT WAS ALWAYS MEANT TO BE !!!
It’ll be hard for quite a large number of fans to accept any form of old Cortana returning and redeeming herself. It’s like forgiving -Yoink!- after he caused the deaths of millions because “he wasn’t feeling like himself,” only this time Cortana has killed billions of humans, Sangheili, Jiralhanae, Unggoy, Kig-Yar, and so on.
Speak for yourself. I’m a die hard Halo fan too, but I’ve never liked Cortana very much and at this point she’s vastly overstayed her welcome - and I certainly don’t want them to just bring her back to the “good side” after doing nothing in ‘Halo 5’ to salvage her character. Also simply reversing this latest “twist”, if you can even call it that, with another one would just make 2 whole games entirely pointless. Enough is enough. 343i decided to throw out the perfectly good ending they gave Cortana’s story arc in ‘Halo 4’ in favor of bringing her back to life and making her a murderer and a predator, so they need to stick with that decision and everything that goes with it.
Also there’s far, far more to the Chief and his story than just the barely 3 months he knew Cortana, and he has many other just as important (if not more so) friends and relationships through which he can be explored and developed. It’s time for him (and by extension fans) to move on - which is what 343i said the story was going to be about going forward last year. And forcing the Chief to be perpetually hung up on a dynamic that has now proven to be unhealthy and unsafe for himself and everyone around him is just wrong on so many levels.
I love the relationship between MC and Cortana and i’m saddened to see it head in the direction it has. Regardless of whether or not Cortana is not in her right mind and even though i want MC to help her redeem herself i still want her to suffer. For this to happen 1) it must look like MC sacrificed himself to save Cortana, with her witnessing it. He doesn’t have to die, it just must look like it. 2) Cortana must loose all the power she gained from the domain. She also must not be able to get it back. Something along the lines of the Precursors have tested her and have found her unworthy. 3) Then Cortana is brought before a collection of all the races she had screwed. Many call for her deletion, but Admiral Hood stops them by saying that 'killing her won’t bring everyone/everything back. To end her life would be removing the cross she must now bear… Admiral Hood now looks at Cortana and continues, 'its the price of knowing what is ‘real’. ‘The price of being human.’ 4)Before she is locked up Cortana asks Admiral Hood what must she do to lose the feeling of guilt that is overwhelming her. His response is chilling. ‘You can never truly lose it. It stays with you forever… unless.’ ‘Unless what?’ Cortana pleads. ‘The one who you have wronged must forgive.’ ’ Unfortunately that would be the Master Cheif and thanks to your bungling he’s not here currently." He then places MC cracked helmet at her feet and leaves the room. As the door closes sealing her in Admiral Hood says, ‘Until then that will keep you company.’ As the light leaves the room Cortana huddles neer the helmet and you faintly her her whisper, ‘John… I’m sorry.’

There truly shouldn’t be a bringing her back. Maybe if it wasn’t her at all and some other force we can rest easy but this “cortana” we see before us must be taken down.
Sorry if I pissed anyone off with my original post. Guess everyone has their own opinion. I just played MCC all the way from CE to Halo 5 and it just doesn’t feel right for me to make Cortana the bad person. All the way through Halo, she is the only companion you have no matter where the MC goes. The bond is way too strong. I can see how 343 might have wanted to go with the good partner gone bad twist but too much has been built up over the years just to -Yoink- it up in one episode. She sacrifices herself for the MC in Halo 4 only to suddenly go against everything John believes in like a stubborn Dictator (either you are with me or against me. I don’t give a -Yoink- what you think anymore, I’ll do whatever i have made my mind up on). Too much of a character motive shift in a span of just one game if you ask me. I’m pretty sure there’s more to it than we think. I would love to believe that the Cortana we’re seeing is actually not her somehow but 343 knows best.
With just one game left, the story’s in such a state that i don’t know how 343 will convincingly do anything to make an elaborate and convincing story. Maybe they should bring out Halo 6 Part A and Part B?

That actually sounds pretty good. Makes for a more satisfying ending than trying to redeem Cortana if you ask me.

Wow that’s … something. C’mon guys ! whatever happened to happy endings? Ever since 343 took over with Halo 4, the series started to get dark, serious and depressing, so I guess you might be right with your prediction.

I’ve never particularly enjoyed happy endings, because they never feel too realistic or plausible to me. In some cases, maybe, but slightly depressing and desperate endings have always been something I like more. I don’t like seeing stuff like :“OH, we killed this thing, EVERYTHING is going to be GREAT FOREVER!!!” Note that that was a very simplified and exaggerated happy ending, but I hope you understand what I mean.
I need it to be clear that this Cortana is not the one we have spent all the games with, and maybe even have the old Cortana confront this imposter, if only to destroy both versions by taking control again. She cannot be redeemed anymore, and her legacy is tainted now because of Halo 5. However, if OG Cortana is able to show John that it wasn’t her, and John gets to show her that he is finally human, then I think it could preserve the good Halo 4 set up.
Since when does a murderer/dictator/abuser/predator need a “happy ending” though? Also what would be so “happy” about perpetually forcing the Chief into a blatantly unhealthy situation?

Thanks for the comments. This ending is centered around Cortana having the Logic Plague. Since the plague is “I’ve never particularly enjoyed happy endings, because they never feel too realistic or plausible to me. I don’t like seeing stuff like :“OH, we killed this thing, EVERYTHING is going to be GREAT FOREVER!!!” Note that that was a very simplified and exaggerated happy ending, but I hope you understand what I ma mutable set of ideas and concepts rather than a quantifiable conventional virus.” reindexing her probably isn’t going to work so she must be convinced or forced to chance her view. As for happy endings… there are the fairytale type and then the real world type. To me the real world type of happy ending things balance each other out. Like in ‘Return of the Jedi’ Luke saves his father but his father soon dies, however Luke learns about his sister so in a way things have balanced out for Luke. Of course these endings can change depending on what happens next. My ending mirrors the Mendicant Bias redemption where he was locked away and came to terms with his actions and tried to balance things out. Note: in my ending Master Chief was not confirmed dead it just looked like he was dead.
Cortana doesn’t need a redemption. That would just make things pointless. Kill her off and then bring back the Didact has the main villain given the fact he is not dead.

The end of Dexter. (Well, better than most viewers assumed) Sometimes when things work out “well” one must live with themselves, and the guilt can be worse than feeling like justice was served.
No matter what you may think of the current state of this story, or of any story, it’s getting harder and harder to come up with an original, satisfying conclusion to any given story. More and more the only ones that satisfy me are the ones that end in cliffhangers or tragedies. But even tragedies are getting overdone. When it’s a cliffhanger though, Fans raise hell, but over in my corner I’m quietly pleased.

No redemption. I have a feeling he’s going to have to be the one to put her down. After all the looking out for each other , placing 100% trust in each other , and saving one another from absolute peril. Halo 6 should test John’s mettle to it’s limit… If his mettle has a limit
