How exactly did the Covenant find Earth?

It seems to me that both Truth and Regret found Earth independently of one another can someone clarify?

Also no. I Love Bees does not count.

Umm from what I remember the Covenant put a tracking device on a ship which went to earth. Truth and Regret were competing with each other so Regret didn’t tell truth about earth so he could get the attention. If this isn’t the answer then for the love of god, type your question unto google or something.

I did I seem to get conflicting answers.

Sonar.

regret found it when he discovered the location of the ark portal, but he wasnt expecting it to be the human homeworld.

I Love Bees is canon (except for the time traveling AI of course.)Regret found some information on a possible Forerunner relic on Earth through the Deadnaught, but he didn’t know it was our homeworld. Truth has known of Earth’s location and the fact that it’s our homeworld. He was actually preparing a fleet but it was damaged/destroyed in Operation: FIRST STRIKE

Truth knew where Earth was for a while, but hid this fact from the other prophets. Regret found out about a forerunner object on the planet and went there, not knowing it was humanity’s homeworld.

Proof? I don’t remember Truth knowing about earth for a long time.

I can’t link it, but if you go to halo.wikia.com, search the prophet of truth and go to the discovery of Earth section. It sais he knew about it for a while.

Regret was being stupid as usual, flying pointlessly around the galaxy with his personal fleet, and stumbled on Earth.

Lol, revenge was so sweet; getting to punch the crap out of him.

That was the purpose of the massive fleet being assembled in First Strike. It was destroyed which allowed Regret to get to Earth before Truth. They were racing to claim the Glory for themselves. Except Regret was a fool and went in with a small force.

Exactly. Regret expected little to no opposition; he didn’t know all of humanity was there.

More like Regret didnt know that he was going head long into the single most heavily defended world left in human space.

Johnson’s speech in Halo 2 is rather fitting for how Regret must have felt after the UNSC gave his fleet the boot off the planet.
