How effective is the UNSC?

We’ve all played the game and we know at times especially on higher difficulty are UNSC troops can either be bullet sponges or actually at times be useful (i.e gun turret, rockets). In the actual story and canon how effective is the UNSC. I’m aware that in Space especially in the war wasn’t necessarily our strong point. At the same time they seem to struggle on Ground Battles. But then you see on Alpha Halo in the books we were super effective in Guerrilla style attacks on the Covenant. I think the most effective UNSC display was in Halo 2. I’ve seen basic ODST on Delta Halo on Legendary drain a shield of an Elite Major Domo. It seems we just aren’t consistent enough to have a definite answer. So in all honesty how effective are the UNSC would you like to see gameplay reflect the book Canon?

Well, gameplay doesn’t really reflect canon (The Golden Rule).

I’d think they’re sort of effective. It’s kind of tough to determine.

The Spartans were incredible at ground engagements, especially the IIs.

ODSTs are also special operations, kind of like Navy Seals today. But, in Forward Unto Dawn, it seems like all of them were overrun by the invading Covenant forces.

Marines probably depend on the amount of them and even the individuals certain skills. The longer you’ve fought the Covenant, the more you’re going to know how they work.

But then again, these Marines are going up against hulking 8-9 foot Brutes, so maybe tactics and sheer valiance allowed us to win ground engagements.

All I can certainly say is that we’re definitely better on the ground than in space, with certain exceptions.

the unsc was tenacious. they fought for every inch of land the covenant wanted. it was through sheer will and strategy that the unsc won.

in space if the unsc didnt outnumber the covies by at least 3 to 1 it would be a swift defeat.

on the ground is where the unsc thrived. between the spartans and odst units the unsc took the more dominant role here.

and really the people who should get the most credit are the scientists who were reverse engineering alien tech for human use.

Yeah I really wish they represented the UNSC more in the gameplay. Because I feel like after years of war the marines should be very effective on the ground. Or at least hold their own against a grunt. I think Half Life does allied A.I justice. And I think Halo should definitely make the marines a bit more effective. Even the Spartan IV’s in Campaign seem to struggle.

Not really effective at all. They lost almost every ground battle, and victories incurred extremely high casualties and losses. For every Covenant soldier killed, the UNSC lost 3 of its own. These victories were also meaningless in the grand scheme of things as not only would they be glassed from orbit but they didn’t form a part of any strategic plan, they were random victories that simply happened on the Covenant’s terms. The games actually seem to portray the UNSC better than they should I think.

See the idea of them being effective is too conflicting.

AI companions have to be iffy or else they could do the player’s work for them. Otherwise you have to flood every fight where you have allies with too many enemies. It also hurts the “you’re humanity’s hope” angle.

That’s the thing there are ways to balance that but to make the AI allies totally brain dead is ridiculous at times I see no point to them. Make them at least effective enough to fight Grunts and Jackals. They should struggle against things like Elites, Brutes, and Hunters. Then again Halo:Reach promised 40 enemies on the field in their vidoc…

Gameplay, as said before, is NOT canon. Marines in canon can be moderately effective against grunts and jackals, but only SPARTANs can be consistently effective against Elites and Brutes.
