When I first got this at launch I tore it up for the first 10 games or so then saw that I was either evenly matched or completely stomped. As the days have wore on I have seen that I’m completely stomped in almost every game I play and have become horribly negative. Now I realize that it may just be the fact that I am not good at this game, which I can accept. But if I am not good, then why doesn’t it start matching me with people who are around my skill level again? I feel as if I’m stuck inside some unbeatable bracket right now.
But yeah it sounds like the system isn’t finding a happy medium for everyone. Another factor is Join in progress that is probably shoving you into games that are unbeatable.
Nothing more fun that being put in a game where the score is 450 to 100 against an obvious team that is in a party
Essentially the system does take into account your wins and losses, and it works to reduce the variability of your skill/play.
It uses two numbers, your uncertainty value (sigma) and your actual skill (mu). Your sigma is basically how the game accounts for luck; it is the numerical representation of what your skill could be. Play consistently for a low sigma, or play inconsistently for a high sigma. Your sigma will start out high, and should eventually come down.
Your mu is the actual representation of your skill. Win games to raise it, lose games to lower it.
The equation (I’ve never actually seen it…my head might explode) also includes a developer constant (k) which -Yoink!- in evening out the variability of other players.
Ultimately, the system tries to predict the outcome of a game…seeing that it’s whole job is to properly assign skill and ability to players. If the teams are fair, not much changes. Similarly if the teams are unbalanced, and the “favorite” wins, not much changes. However if the “underdog” wins, then the underdog’s ranking will increase more dramatically, while the “favorite” will see a dramatic decrease in rank.
Really cool! Thanks a lot for the input. I’m just tired of getting teamed up against people who are 2000+ positive when I am going on almost 500 negative now. I kind of understand how it’s happening now though… Sometimes I’ll have a REALLY good game, then 10 horrible ones. Most of the time I’ll either go horribly negative or even with a lot of kills and a lot of deaths.
