So this is something I’ve never really understood but is the Heal and Repair function that the Spirit of Fire have canon? If it is how the hell does it work?
I would say that the green beam we see contain nanomachines and resources at an atomic level and thats how they repair vehicles.
I dont think its canon, at least not until Halo Wars 2 (since, you know, Forerunner tech, Lifeworkers could do stuff like that). In HW1 its just a game mechanic.
In HW2 they mention Restoration Drones so…

This.
NANOMACHINES SON! They harden in response to physical trauma.

The UNSC’s nanotech was not at the level it is in 2559 in 2531. In 2559, armor can miraculously completely redesign itself in cryo. In 2531, the UNSC had clothes which could harden if they were hit by TTR fluid and probably some minor other things like for surgery. In Halo Wars, it’s likely just meant to represent reinforcement and repair of troops on the ground by all the conventional means.
I’d also venture to say that it’s not canon as it appears in Halo Wars 2 gameplay and is, once again, just a game mechanic.
Though I will say this - I’m interested by the amount of combat drones the Spirit of Fire acquired between Halo Wars 1 and 2. Snipers use drones to spot for them. Nightingales use repair and medical drones to keep soldiers and vehicles in the fight - and we know Nightingales aren’t a new innovation, because Red Team makes a point of noticing them before they encounter Isabel. It’s likely they were produced by Serina while the Spirit was drifting, based on prototype designs she was privy to but which had not been implemented during the encounter on the Shield World.
The reason I bring this up is because it’s also possible, though less likely, that the abilities of Heal and Repair represent the mass-deployment of drones from the Spirit of Fire.

The procurement of drones is most likely from UNSC and human resources on the Ark as is the justification for most of the changes in HW2. The Nightingale is weird because Red Team acknowledges them but the Phoenix log says they are a new aircraft so I’m not sure which is correct. Clearly an over-sight.

Or something that happened off-screen.

That is a possibility.
I’m pretty sure the game itself says they are nanomachines. As to how they acquired them, I’m guessing they might have been taken from the research station, since they also got their Condors from it.
Like this. Honestly though based off of comments from 343i in the past this is probably the real answer.

I suppose that’s true. Maybe the recon team radioed up about finding one and deducing it’s use before the Spartans got down there.

More than likely. That recon team got shot down before Red Team arrived. They probably had a day or two on the Ark before they found the research base.
