Hello,
I’m just played my 10 placement matches with my friend (we played them together). Won 7 out of 10. I personally did a lot more damage and work to win the game. I get placed Plat 4 96% and he gets placed Plat 6 4%.
I can find absolutely nothing to explain this ranking system.

Yeah. But that should affect it. It should be based off the 10 placement matches

That’s a negative. Your previous season’s hidden MMR remains unless an extracurricular reset is announced (has happened once so far). Your placement matches are determined somewhat off of your existing hidden MMR.
So while you and your buddy played the same 10 matches you’ll both have difference MMR’s, which means you’ll experience different results.

So how is that determined? Is there a specific aspect of the match that ranks higher than the other? For example, most power generated or resources gathered, etc

It’s very unlikely that individual in-game stats affect your MMR at all. Each game is probably based off of your team’s MMR (for team war - mean MMR, possibly weighted mean).
More points being awarded for beating an opponent with a higher MMR than yours and fewer for beating an opponent with a lower MMR. The opposite being true for losing.
This is speculation though as the actual model is kept secret.
I believe MMR is the defining factor in determining matchups for placement matches ( similar MMR vs similar MMR).
Once placed into a league with a CSR (Competitve Spartan Ranking - not to be confused with MMR: Matchmaking Ranking), you then play against people predominantly in your similar CSR.

That included 49 kills, 40 deaths, 23 assists. I had a KDA of 0.9 with 43 kills, 39 deaths, 17 assists. We won 7/10 games. We won 7 straight then lost the last three facing a champion ranked #5. I got gold 5, my friend got plat 5, just shy of plat 6. How the hell is that possible? We tried living for as long as possible since we thought length of life figured into overall rank, but that apparently isn’t true. So WTF? I hate this game more than ever now. What did I do that was so different that I would rank 6 ranks lower? -Yoink- sake 343, fix the game.

The ranking in Halo 5 is determined by a variety of factors including your previous season placements, the quality of your opposition and whether your team wins or loses.
