How does one KNOW when they are the HOST?

I hear people talking about what happens when hosts change and some conversations suggest that you can know who the host is, or at least when your xbox is the host.

Is this possible? And if so, how does one know?

Before the game starts the host is the person listed at the top of the roster (press x)

As far as I know there are no definitive in-game cues that tell you who the new host is when the host changes mid-game.

In Halo 3, there were certain things like the cc-tv cams on the pit (at shotgun spawn). If your host then the camera would pan and follow you when you move past but if your not then they don’t move.

In Reach, the first time you spawn at the start of the game or after a host change your reticule would bloom as if you has just fired (but only if your host).

I don’t think that’s entirely accurate 100% of the time. For customs, we have a “host check” kind of map and sometimes the results and who’s on the top of the list don’t jive.

I’m not discounting it or anything just offering my experience with it.

So in Muliplayer, it is the person at the top of the list and the team that they are part of is the top half of the list?

When you hit X to view the active roster, the player at the top is host.
Another way to tell if you have host is when ordinance drops. If you see a yellow circle around the area any sort of ordinance drops, you have host. This works for both personal and world ordinance.

That works for matchmaking 100%, does not work for customs.

Top person when you press x in MM. Also, yellow ring around ordinance drops.

I don’t know about Halo 4 but in Halo 3 there were so many ways to check if you were the host.

  1. Shoot the icicles on Narrows.
  2. The cameras in Sword room will watch you on The Pit.
  3. You connection is listed as the middle connection (So if there was one red bar on your connection, and one green bar, it would say you were yellow bar).
  4. You can pick up weapons holding (insert pick up button) while walking past it, and isn’t required to press the button exactly when you are on top of it.
  5. Standing on a fusion coil and sooting it would make you fly a lot higher than all the other players.
  6. You will feel it. Every of your bullets will connect.
  7. The players won’t do backflips when you kill them but instead fold forward.
  8. You can shoot the birds on guardian.
  9. You can sword and beat down through windows.
  10. You will have to hit exactly on their head every time.

Dam … I don’t remember anymore ways to check if you are host.

Thank you all kindly for your replies. So I guess the next question is if I have host what benefits should I see (matchmaking, not customs)?

Easier to use projectile weapons with more consistent results. You should also see more consistency out of explosives, and people will never eat shots.

Snicker doodle are you using a race game type?? If you are I bet you’ll find that whoever comes in last is actually host due to the lag compensation . A better way is for everyone to throw a grenade or fire the rocket launcher at the same time the grenade that explodes first or rocket that does is host as those are authoritive meaning that host sayes when they can appear. Basically host’s rockets or grenades are instant all others wait , same with sprint you can’t start sprinting till host sayes so. Ever wonder why in a game you try to sprint and can’t? That’s why , your waiting on the host to start the animation for all players to see you sprinting.

There’s also no delay from a person’s death to the confirmation on your screen that you received a kill. I never think about the delay until I have host, and it’s quite apparent to me.

I’m talking about the roster list while your still in the lobby just before the game actually starts. In this list, I don’t think it separates the players into teams but I’ve never payed that much attention to anything except who is on the top.

The scoreboard that you view in-game where players are definitely separated into teams gives no indication as to how is host

Thanks for the clarification.

Like everyone else has said in here, all you have to do is check the roster before each game starts in MM while your in lobby choosing a gametype, and map.

Also in infinity game types there is a green/semi-colored flower pedal looking, overly noticeable indicator below your ordinances when they are called in, and this appears for random ordinances on each map as well upon impact.

As others said, the ordnance markers.

Your headshots will actually count as host, especially when someone turns and runs to hide. Most of the time if someone turns their back to me without a shield, I can shoot them 4 times in the back of the head with a DMR as they’re running, and they won’t die. But if I turn my back to an enemy to run, their first shot immediately kills me, probably because I’m still facing forward on their screen or something. It’s ridiculous.
