how does matchmaking ranking work?

i played all 10 games with same guys and we all got different division rankings. i thought divisions were based on win percentage only

It’s based on win percentage, yes

yes but it cant be because two members got placed in onyx, one in diamond and one in platinum

Then idk then, probably K/D as well too then

Here’s how it works. You win some, you lose some. You get a division. Then when you go to play in your Division, you get matched up against people who are in a higher division than you. That’s how it works.

Sarcasm aside, no eff-in clue how it works. Based mostly on wins, but a little on K/D also. That’s how I can get Diamond with my full team but my cousin gets Platinum.

I’d like to know how the matching works though, because as I mentioned, it’s basically “Here, you’re Platinum, go play against Onyx. Oh, are you Diamond rank now? Go play against Champions.”

Yes! Your wins and losses are important-ish. And your K/DA in those games play a decent role. So of those guys you placed with, who had different ranks, some of you probably did consistently better or worse than the others. Also when ranks reset the game doesn’t forget where you were at. It isn’t a legitimate reset like you are starting over. if you are ranked high Onyx at end of season, you could lose half your placement games and still rank in Onyx. I don’t know an equation/formula to show these things, but I’ve seen it first hand like you.

Me and my buddy played all 10 games together. We won 8 out of 10 matches. And we both did very well on our K/D. And just eyeing the numbers I did consistently slightly better. But he ranked Diamond 6. I ranked Diamond 3. After really looking into the potential ‘why’s’ behind this I came up with 2 possible conclusions: 1. Halo hates me. or 2. everything I just explained to you about the ranking system.

I love when I fight onyxs and champions

/sarcasm

While your number of wins is a major factor in your initial rank, your previous ranks in other seasons also affect what rank you get, and how much you ranked up during those seasons also affects what rank you get in the next season. For example, in preseason you could have been ranked plat 3 initially, and then made your way up to diamond 2, then in the next season during your placement matches you will be more likely to be ranked into diamond because of your last season rank. Also, your solo performance also has an effect on how well you get ranked too I believe. From past experience, what I have seen is the matchmaking system will give you games where you play against players who are all lower ranked than you, and then maybe it will play you against players higher ranked, and try to find a balance between those two spots to give you your rank. And depending on how well you perform against people who rank high/low will depend on how you get ranked (e.g. first placement game plays against gold-plat players and gets k/d of 2.0 and wins, so next game is matched against diamond-onyx players and lose with a k/d of 0.9, then matchmaking will rank you down into the plat/diamond to balance out your ranks).

ok this makes perfect sense. ive been playing the game 3 months now but made dramatic improvement the past month. guys i played with are onyx and previously ranked onyx in arena. i was ranked plat 3 and put back in that division. yet im onyx in all other playlist. if you look at our individual stats from the 10 games theres not much differences there. this ranking system is seriously flawed

Yeah its flawed but its something we have to deal with till they do something about it. Especially FFA since anyone can get to onyx by playing alot of matches :expressionless:
