I know there are two separate ranks: Spartan Rank (SR), which i think is similar to Halo 4’s in which you just gain xp as you play, and Competitive Skill Rank (CSR), what i want to know is that if the CSR is levels 1-50 like previous titles, or is it similar to Halo Reach’s Arena mode in which you ranked up and after a period of time the rank resets, which is pretty boring in my opinion.
It’s more similar to Reach’s Arena ranking system.
I don’t think it’s boring, but to each their own.
Something different that Halo 5 has over Reach is that the top 200 players in a playlist will have the rank of “Pro”. I think this is a great addition and will add an exciting level of competition for the top 200 spots.
There are a few differences to from Halo Reach and Halo 5’s ranking system still, but to keep it short yes it is akin to Reach’s.
I think there also might be a Halo 4 XP Progression system as well, but I can’t confirm that. If someone else could that would be great.

Can you provide a source for the “Something different that Halo 5 has over Reach is that the top 200 players in a playlist will have the rank of “Pro”. I think this is a great addition and will add an exciting level of competition for the top 200 spots.”
Thanks

After advancing through the Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Onyx leagues you will be placed in the Semi-pro league which has a number attached to it, starting at 1500. The 200 highest semi-pros will be ranked as Pro’s. Also when the ranks reset all Semi-pro’s/Pro’s will be kept in the Semi-pro bracket.
*This is how it was in the beta, expect changes

Okay, so let’s say I played a crap ton of H5 and I’m about to break Onyx and go Semi-pro (assume the ranks have already reset once) if the people who already hit semi-pro and pro are still at that level since they were kept there, does that mean I can’t get into semi-pro?

That’s a shame, i would rather have a 1-50 level progression, the reset of the ranks would be awful when i’m about to hit semi-pro.

An infinite amount of players can get to the Semi-Pro rank. Only the top 200 Semi-Pros can have the Pro rank.
Made a thread about this a little while back, here’s a great article talking about it

You could play for fun. I know it’s such a crazy idea, but maybe you’d like it.
I know that I play for fun, hanging out with my friends and just having a good time.

If you dont play while you are in semipro you’re ranking will get overtaken by someone else since its only a certain amount of players who can be ranked as semi pro at the same time. Remember there is still plenty of reason to play arena for, this skill based ranking is made to show you’re own skills compared to other players and match you against similar skill ranked players.
What I’m about to tell you is based on the beta. You are placed into divisions ranging from Iron to Semi-Pro (top 200 semi-pros have pro status) based on your first 10 game performances. After that, you will either gain or lose experience based on whether you win or lose. As far as I know you can’t rank down (go from Gold to Silver for instance), you can only rank up. Of course, this could very well change in the actual game, but that is what the beta was like.
They need to keep the reach system for the XP ranks, the whole SR1-SRn system is utterly boring.

The SR-1 system thing is for the progression of your ‘sr level’, which give req packs. It’s commendation/time put into the game based, not a real level. Just helps you get new cards.
It wasn’t mentioned, but note that you need to play 10 matches to get placed in a rank.
If you’re Onyx and about to hit semi-pro, and the ranks reset? You’ll probably get placed in Semi-Pro or the Onyx rank closest to it after your placement matches, if you’re actually that good at least.
The placement matches take individual skill into account. After that though, it’s win/loss. If you were someone who managed to get really lucky by winning a lot, but performing terribly (which I doubt will happen that much, to be honest) then you’ll probably rank lower than that, but that’s obvious.

I agree. Military social ranks > Number ranks.
Is there any word on how “deep” the ranking system goes?
A contributor to Halo 4’s population problem was that so many players would quickly reach the level 130 cap and stop playing, whereas it took hundreds and hundreds of hours to get to the highest ranks in Halo 3 and Reach; few players ever got to Inheritor for instance, because of the required time investment

As far as social ranks (Spartan Rank / SR) goes, no idea.
On a recent blog post from the REQ pack video, there was a REQ pack rewarded at rank 158, so we know it’s higher than 130. I believe the needed XP to rank up is a lot better than 4 as well, but don’t take my word for it, just observing from beta videos.

Except for the fact that you can work to break into the top 200 Pro rank and view your position against the other 199 Pro’s in a worldwide leader board.

You’re describing the Pro rank. Like I said in a previous post in this thread; an infinite amount of players can be Semi-Pro’s. Only the top 200 Semi-Pro’s will be ranked as Pro’s and will have to keep playing and winning games to not get dropped from the top 200(Although that depends on how many games you play and win compared to how many games other Pro’s are playing and winning).
It boggles the mind how many people don’t understand the concept of ranks. The term RANK needs to go away in Halo it’s RATING…
Your goal is always to play your best and to progress up but the RATING system is designed to generate good games more often then not. If you can’t reach a certain level you should be perfectly happy with where you fall because everyone around you should have similar playing abilities. No more getting stomped.
I expect the first 3-6 weeks will be pretty rough but after 2-3 months everyone should be around where they should be placed.
Also, I am pretty sure they will have quarterly resets or something like that, so if you feel you were locked in a place some how you get to start over from time to time.
edit: weird ended up in the wrong thread
