How exactly does halo 5 pick the server for the game? Is there any reason to why if say people from the west coast play people in doubles from the east coast how does the game decide which server to use? Do they pick the closest one to one of the players or do you connect to a middle server between the 2 and how is the decision made by the game?
The search preferences help decide this. If you choose “Focused”, you will only connect to nearby data centers. Your ping will be low if you select “Focused”. Choosing “Balanced” or “Expanded” will allow the game to connect you to data centers farther away from you, increasing your ping but also giving you more games to match, so you’ll find one faster. However, if you select “Focused” and connect to a nearby server, you can still play with other people with high ping if they used “Balanced” or “Expanded” to search. The search options only affect your ping.
I imagine that when choosing a server for you, the important factors would be available memory and time spent searching.

I never knew exactly how that worked and I actually learned alot from this. My only other question is how is it decided in custom games? I imagine this is much more complicated.
Chimera30 is pretty much spot on with the search preferences. There is a downfall though about having these type of search preferences. When the system checks for the initial ping it takes only a quick snapshot of a servers ping. The bad part about this is that if your connection to that particular server has ping spiking going on your SOL… Ping spikes are what really kills the games performance… Just to give an example… Lets say a player has a ping of 23ms in a game and another player has a ping of 78ms. One would think that having a ping of 23ms would be awesome! But the player with 23ms has ping spikes going on… The player with 78ms has a fairly consistent ping through out the game… The player with the 78ms because of his consistent ping will dominate in the game… This is very critical when it comes to gaming and very few players know this… These type of search preferences are very old school and dated. Specially for a game on dedicated servers… If you really want to dominate a game that is like this your best option is to buy a very high end gaming router… Like ASUS or Netduma. Even Netgear has one router that is good for gaming also… Routers like these give you full control of what servers you play on. It also gives you real time ping stats while playing and you can block servers that give you bad ping spikes… Its a very good tool to have if you like Halo or games alike! There are many key features that all focus on gaming in these type of routers…
The servers are not dedicated to just halo 5 they use microsoft azure data sharing servers

Im not exactly sure what your point is by this… Care to explain?
Sorry if you havent noticed playing a game and you cant kill another play with a hit tobthe face with rockets or you punch them and nothing happens or when you play swat and its like a games of slayer after 10,000 games you notice things like that
