I’m using Verizon FIOS for my Xbox Live. I work for Verizon, so I know that my connection is flawless. Why am I lagging? Why do I rarely get host?
How does Halo 4 lag? Can someone break down the science for me?

P2P system with bugs, plus XBox live only uses a very low bandwidth. That all there is to it really.
Low bandwith means that connection speed doesnt really play a part in quality of connection unless the speed is on the very low side (ie 256k). This is so that new territories for Live are on the same level as older ones. A 50mb connection has the same LIVE connection speed for gaming as a 1mb connection, there is no difference. A quality line is all that is required for good gaming on LIVE (in theory).
The P2P system the game uses can also be affected by some ISP. Some are known to shape P2P traffic, meaning lower quality connections to other players. Plus its buggy.
I found the following Wikipedia entry helpful in explaining online lag:
(Because of the weird parentheses, I recommend cutting and pasting the address)

Mind schooling me on what does “He always pulls host” or “I never get host” mean?
Also a new algorithm has been introduced into this game which is intended to make sure every shot counts for players. however, certain weapons seem to have problems, such as our lovely DMR which fails to register! All in all it seems also that if you live in N. America then you pull host (fact) I feel all the problems experienced are down to this Algorithm. If this is modular then 343 should unplug it and test / improve it in isolation forthwith. I really feel for all Halo players and see a Death in the family. I only come to H4 once a week to see if there’s any changes… and today there was a 32meg patch rarely seen with Bungie on this scale Sad to say, pass this one on by, Maybe hope they got their act together for H5 next Xmas? if not, I for one will get a PS4 as Halo is the only reason I have Xbox. Happy Xmas and good luck.
