Didn’t it kinda…y’know, get atomized in its terminal on the Didact’s ship?
Wow, plot hole already and we only have one trailer. Maybe in his ONI captivity Chief made a replica out of the pieces of the shield generator of his armor, which is why he needs to wear a canvas hobo bag to protect himself.
It’s symbolic. John can’t let go. He’s trying to bring it all back by clinging to familiarity (as we see from how he’s in his old armour following it being taken off at the end of Halo 4), but even the armour shows that he can’t anymore. He’s trying to hide his true self with the cloak but has to pop back out when another threat arises. In this situation, you can clearly see him gathering his resolve and strength to keep going from thinking about Cortana.
I’ve not played the campaign in some time, but doesn’t he all the time leave cortana in a computer system and put the empty chip back in his helmet only to redownload her later?
I would have to rewatch, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he had the chip but not cortana.

Not that I recall in the animations. He always seems to–in every time he removes her from a Forerunner system-- to pull out the chip, and re-insert it to his helmet.
Which if you think about it, really makes me wonder how a UNSC datachip can interface flawlessly with 100,000 year old Forerunner technology.
Needless to say though, he shouldn’t have the chip, it got vaporized with Cortana. And it doesn’t sound like Chief to go around carrying a blank Datachip that can hold a smart AI for no reason even if it reminded him of Cortana, and the UNSC wouldn’t just let him have one either, considering a Smart AI can cost as much as a suit of MJOLNIR or a battleship.

> And did the events of any of the Halo 3 Cg trailers happen? No. The trailer is non-canon. Its just an easy visual plot device.
Did halo 3’s multiplayer have a story aspect behind it? No. So dont just assume this has no story significance. Also, last time I checked, halo 4s trailer all had significance to the story.
as you can see, the cheif is pretty beat, One AI chip, Forged from the Sands of the very desert that the chief has been traveling through, For all we know, as there is a Promothean (what looks like one anyway) either we have discovered a new forerunner world, or the cheif could have made some new friends, which i really hope given the really cool speculation about what the chief is going though Chief going rouge from the UNSC after finding out what they tried to do to Halsy anyway, back to the point, the Chief could have retrieved the chip from the wreckage of the didacts ship or he could have been given it either by the Promethean or the UNSC, either way, I feel that the next halos will be focused on getting back Cortana

it sorta did, it introduced the Brute special class and equipment, might not have been a significant part of the story line but it had allot of relevance to the game its self.
If John is trying to get Cortana back he would ensure he has an empty data chip to transfer her back into his suit. Whether it’s the same one from Halo 4 is yet to be determined but there is nothing stopping him getting a new data chip to carry around.

This. It’s all symbolic, while likely presenting a new weapon-threat and a familiar location (the Ark.)
Also was it just me, or did it look like he threw the chip away? That kicked me a bit… I do hope Cortana isn’t left behind for good.
