How do you want Chief written in Infinite?

Chief has been written a couple different ways across the games. In the original trilogy, he is written to essentially be a blank slate, a vessel for the player. He doesn’t really have much development or depth. However, in Halo 4, 343 decided to give Chief more character development and beginning a personal journey. They also incorporated more of his personality from the novels. They continued to do this in Halo 5, despite him not being in the game much. With Infinite coming this year, how do you hope they write Chief? I’m hoping they continue the route they started in Halo 4, showing his personality and giving him development. However, with them calling this a ‘spiritual reboot’ of sorts, I won’t be too shocked if they decide to go back to the method Bungie used in the OT.

I think they shouldn’t back down on their idea of developping chief cause the new trilogy is more or less about him and his relation with cortana.
I just want him to be badass and very well written.

For me personally, I liked the way he was in Halo 1-3 the best. I didn’t totally dislike how he was in 4 or 5 or anything (what little we saw of him in 5 lol) but I just felt more connected to him in 1-3. I kind of felt like 343I changed his personality somewhat in 4,5 and again, I didn’t hate it but wished they didn’t as much. Now, I’ll admit I haven’t read the books, but I have lore friends who have and aside from a few changes to the Chief which they agree on, they actually feel like the Chief from Halo 1-3 is more like himself. They also bring up that as time went on, he did change a bit (as most of us do) but not to the degree where he seems like a different person. He’s the strong silent type, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t care or doesn’t show personality.

People say he didn’t show a lot of personality in 1-3 and I massively disagree with that, as do my friends. I felt it right here (hits my heart) when he wanted to get Cortana back and when he finally did. That scene in Halo 3 when the grave mind has her and he gets her back. Oh man, I didn’t need to see the Chiefs face to know he was relieved or happy to see her, you can tell. Even when Johnston died or when Keyes died, All those scenes, you know he was hurting. When the Covenant attacked, he wanted to kick there butts!! You know he was going to mess them up!!! You could hear it in his voice (I guess this stuff is also testament to the writing and Steve Downes voice work as well) I feel like Chief is the kind of guy who doesn’t need to say a lot to show he cares or is passionate about something. Maybe it’s because one of my best friends in real life who I’ve know for 35+ years is like this, so I get it. He isn’t an emotional person, he isn’t one to talk about his feelings or get super excited or whatever. I can just tell at times. Yeah sometimes his voice gives it away, or body language but other times, I just know. His actions speak for him too. To me this was the Chief.

I think in 4 especially his character for me was too… I don’t know if emotional is the right word or not, but he just didn’t seem like him a lot of the time. Now, I get the situation and what’s going on, I do but still… I don’t have a problem with 343I adding in some things from the books and whatnot at all, actually I’m all for it in that scene say when he’s “out of character” aka showing he’s human per sey because of the situation going on, that’s fine… but the rest of the game, I want the Chief to feel like the Chief and for me more times then not, he didn’t in 4 or 5 but I still liked him :upside_down_face:

I rather preferred the OG trilogy Chief. He was quippy and bad-yoink-. But now that the H4 Chief has been introduced, which I did find compelling and interesting in a different way, then we really can’t go back. It would just seem off to do a 180 like that. Going from a flat character to a dynamic character is okay, but going from dynamic back to flat doesn’t make much sense to me. So really the only option I see is to keep going with Chief as a more developed character rather than a blank slate.

Put me down for classic Chief for all the reasons listed above. He said it better than I could.

I’d like a mixture. The way he was in the 2019 trailer was so good.

I’d like the approach taken with the original trilogy. The Master Chief is a pure soldier, and he’s at his best when his only non-combat contributions are when they’re absolutely necessary (or to drop a one-liner). The Master Chief was always meant to simply be a vessel for the player.

quiet, stoic and slightly emotional pretty much what he was like in the original trilogy but introducing Blue Team like they did in Halo 5 Chief should’ve opened up more in sense of “good old times” rather than continue the stoic approach to everyone.

Well, that makes sense cause Chief in 1-3 was written in a way that you could basically project yourself onto him as a character. He was quiet, he was witty, he was a bad-yoink!- character. He was written in a way that is kind of boring to some; he was hollow. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but I love a character with good background building to hold them up. A personality is always a crowd winner in my opinion (of course, you are more than free to love that version of Chief!)

> I kind of felt like 343I changed his personality somewhat in 4,5

They actually didn’t though. Leading back to your previous statement of how you felt connected to him in 1-3?

He was a blank slate character.

He was meant to be a biped on a map that performed whatever tasks the player tried to achieve. He had very little personality, just enough to get some words out, a chuckle or two from the audience, and to make him come off as that cool guy that doesn’t look at explosions, he just walks away in slow motion. Again this isn’t the worst thing in the world, but it can only go on for so long before eventually, it grows stale.

The Master Chief in Halo 4 and I guess 5 (because we honestly didn’t get enough Chief to get an accurate picture of what the Chief is like) is said to be exactly like he was in the novels. Granted I’ve never read any of the novels, I will take their word for it. It was just a strange shift because we went from quiet and stoic to emotionally attached and human.

> He’s the strong silent type, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t care or doesn’t show personality.

From what I understand? He wasn’t always the strong and silent type. I think he became that way after losing so much during the almost 3 decade long war. You’d be a quiet guy too if you watched so many people die for a war that didn’t need to exist.

When he was a kid, he was outgoing, rambunctious, bullheaded, competitive. The people he grew up with molded him into a better person for the team and their family as they went on.

But Chief soon became all about the mission. He can’t fail a mission, it’s absolutely unacceptable to fail. In fact, the only thing more important to Chief than completing the mission, is protecting the innocent and those he cares about.

> People say he didn’t show a lot of personality in 1-3 and I massively disagree with that, as do my friends

Eh, I mean, he honestly didn’t say a whole lot, so I can see where people might come from. Because we can’t see his face and have to go by the tone of his voice for what he’s feeling or thinking, it can often seem like Chief is just expressionless.

It’s all in his movement. His body shows way more expression than his voice ever could.

> He isn’t an emotional person, he isn’t one to talk about his feelings or get super excited or whatever. I can just tell at times. Yeah sometimes his voice gives it away, or body language but other times, I just know. His actions speak for him too. To me this was the Chief.

Chief is a complicated person. He isn’t someone you’re going to figure out right away, if ever.

> I think in 4 especially his character for me was too… I don’t know if emotional is the right word or not, but he just didn’t seem like him a lot of the time.

His best friend that he trusted his life with was dying and a Forerunner General harboring a hatred for Humanity was on his way to eradicate every last one of them. I think he’s got a reason for not quite acting himself. Just saying.

Long story short; Chief is finally coming to terms with his humanity and trying to make things right, but he’s only human and so he’s going to seem a lot different than soldier/by the books Chief.

I don’t think they should just get rid of everything they did in 4-5. I think they should continue his development as a character.

i really liked the way they developed him in halo 4

the best way to write chief is for him to finish his mission that he started in Guardians but he needs to have a more personal aspect
