I like to think as we haven’t seen the infinity {or what happened to it} that it was heavily damaged and just went full Leeroy Jenkins and rammed the guardian, could make for an awesome area to explore with a mix of human and forerunner debris.

Perhaps it was some shenanigans to do with The Weapon (the new Cortana). I wouldn’t be surprised if she had something to do with it, she was built to take down the original Cortana after all.

Well we are “defeated” so our flag ship, the strongest ship in our fleet possibly in the orion belt would presumably be out of action right?
Just guess work on my behalf now but it would make sense considering humanity is once again is fighting for survival.
I would not be surprised if the game opens 6months before brohammer wakes up John and we seethe infinity going down possibly by raming a guardian to the surface of zeta?
I mean not much else aside from anders installation 04c

It’s not known, from the outline of the unsc ship downed next to the guardian, it sure looks like Infinity, and would explain how so much unsc tech is on zeta halo. But then it also means how do we get off the ring, which is another theory, maybe spirit of fire turns up which would tie in with the banished…
Actually there is a ton of UNSC tech on zeta halo because the UNSC and more specificly ONI has a lot of bases on Zeta halo.

Okay.
I reckon that when the Weapon infiltrated the Domain, it actually failed or was bait. Cortana did what she did to that Covenant AI in the books and straight up consumed it.
But, that inadvertently (unless that was the real plan) actually cured Cortana from rampancy because she used those components to restore her personality which was damaged by her rampancy in Halo 4. It’s not a virus so whatever defences she had wouldn’t work.
So she suddenly becomes aware of the millions of people she killed and what she’s done to the galaxy. Remember this is an AI that is aware of everything and can remember everything. This causes Cortana to have a mental breakdown and has an incredibly destructive effect of the Domain because she’s connected to it. This cripples the Guardian and breaks her connection to the Domain.
Cortana then subconsciously leaves the Domain, jettisons all her memories and adopts a new persona/personality which is the Weapon. I never did those terrible things, I am this sweet and innocent AI. If you’ve ever read the Stormlight Archives they did something similar with Shallan where her split personalities become completely new people.
I think the Chief is fully aware this is the case and is lying to the weapon. In the trailer he avoids looking at her and seems to be questioning her to ascertain if this is an elaborate trick or debating if he should take her out of the facility. How would he know the Weapon was on Zeta Halo if the plan was for her to self delete?

Thats one wild theory but seems way too convoluted and sort of off topic. This is much more than an explanation of how the guardian crashed haha.

I’m gonna stick with the theory that
Cortana pulsed the infinity with the guardian and it crashed into it trapping it in zetas gravity and pulling both down to the surface destroying them in the process.
Hmm. I wonder if it’s a bit like the Pegasus in Battlestar where they had everyone shuttle out before the ram?
Like even if the Guardian fired it’s EMP it isn’t stopping forward momentum. 
Plus if the UNSC were left in shuttles and then the Banished ambushed them that would explain why so many died.

I just assumed it was still on the run from Cortana or laying low to not arouse suspicion from the created. Not that it was physically downed or out of action.

So essentially this.
Roland: captain lasky we have a significant slipspace rupture manifesting at these coordinates.
Palmer: is it-
Catherine: It is her, it is a guardian. She’s got us this time, we need to evacuate.
Lasky: (to Roland) Roland sound the alarm, I want everyone to life boats NOW.
(To palmer) get Dr. Halsey off this ship, shes our most valuable asset once this boat sinks.
Palmer: captain?
Lasky: that’s an order spartan! Go!
(To roland) I want anything we have about Blue team’s objective scrubbed, no traces, then set course for that
rupture and put any juice we can spare into main engine thrust.
Roland:Done sir.
Halsey: (wry smile on her face but sadness in her eyes as Palmer forces her towards the main deck entrance) of all the people aboard the infinity, you, captain, are one of the few who can stand beside my Spartans. It was an honor.
Palmer: (face of angry realisation) Captain-
Lasky: as of now you are in command of the infinity’s crew, finish this sarah, stop what we started.
(To roland) tranfer controls to me and hitch a ride on Captain Palmer off this thing, pronto.
Roland: If its all the same to sir-
Lasky: Its not! Thats an order Roland, don’t tell me you are gonna rogue now too? Not now.
Roland: No sir, never. I never could fly this bird without anyway sir.(spartan ops reference)
Cut to montage of unsc escaping the ship, infinity crashing lasky at the helm, gaurdian and infinity breaking atmosphere and landing, cortana monologue begins but is cut off and Escharum speaks, camera pans as a space battle lapses to a wreckage and 6 months go by the camera centres on john 117 adrift, que piano.
