I’M completely confused on the whole k/d stat. What I don’t understand is what is a good k/d ratio. I’m comparing mine to my friend to see whos is better. Mine is 1/12, and his is 1/79. Can somebody tell me whos is better?

Well, your KD ratio is higher. They’re both quite low, but KD doesn’t really show skill. It doesn’t account for many things.
It all depends on what gametypes you play. I play mostly Arena and my K/D is about 1.2 which I’ll take because that means for every 12 kills I have 10 deaths. As long as your going positive your contributing.
But like it’s been mentioned it always varys on what you play/who you play and how you play. Your K/D can be negative but you still could have good communication and team work and be a more effective player then someone with a high K/D.
I would say a good K/D is just 1/1. Nothing insane that means you get a kill for every death. Don’t fret if it’s not that high because as long as you play smart and communicate and win games that will always negate a low K/D

I think he means 1.12 not 1/12 or .08.
Be careful with those fractions you confuse people, I was confused to till I checked your stat sheet. But his 1.79 is higher.
Anything over 1.0 is decent, the higher the better. If you kill more then you are killed, you are an asset to your team for the most part.
Welcome to Waypoint.
Don’t get hung up on K/D. It’s overemphasised by most. Worrying about it all the time will detract from the fun, too. As already mentioned, it doesn’t cover everything and there are lots of variables. I’m just under 1 myself, but none of my friends mind playing with me. LOL But I communicate well, laugh it up and pull off some superman moments when it counts…plus we win a lot.
I’ve played kids who told me after the match that they thought I’d totally suck and they were shocked when I whooped their -Yoinks!-. I just tell them not to focus on K/D, since it doesn’t show how much I actually play objectives and cover my teammates butts.
I agree with Kronik, worrying about k/d will RUIN all the fun of the game. In Halo 3 I never worried about and I had alot of fun. Ignorance is bliss I guess, but in Reach I began being completely obsessed with my k/d that a +5 game would make me upset. I’ve started getting away from that state of mind and Im starting to have fun now…
But more to your question, when I look at other peoples k/d, if I see one less than a 1.30 or so I consider them be average at best (no offense to anyone).
0.96 and below will get you many friends here on waypoint. It’s also required to like everything about Halo, dismiss the bad things, not be competitive and bam! instant community member of the week.
In the game though? 1.50 through 1.90 is average, 2.0 through 2.50 is good and anything above at or above 3.0 is god tier.
> 1.50 through 1.90 is average, 2.0 through 2.50 is good and anything above at or above 3.0 is god tier.
I’d say:
>.99 - Below Average
1.00-1.3 - Average
1.31-1.5 - Above Average
1.51 - 1.75 - Skilled
1.76 - 2.0 - Very Skilled
<2.1 - God Tier
The problem with players that have greater than a 1.75 K/D is that they often boost Grifball, Objective, or BTB to get higher - thus it’s not legitimate. Often times, I’ll be sitting in a pregame lobby waiting for a game to start, and I’ll check K/D’s. If I come across one that’s above a 2.0, I’ll check the game history out of curiosity, and nine times out of ten they full party boost in Objective or in Grifball.
It’s not the case for everyone, but I’d say it happens more than half the time. I’ve met some great players with unbelievably high K/D’s, however I’m always a little skeptical. I have a 1.55 K/D myself, and I play mostly Super Slayer, Objective, and Action Sack with a little Snipes and SWAT mixed in. Also, if you look at most MLG Pro’s K/D’s, they’re roughly between 1.3-1.5.

I don’t think you undertand how numbers, ratios, and averages work.
From my experience, k/d means little. Myself, if you have a >1 k/d I’m not intimidated in the pregame lobby, so I am inclined to use a less careful, head on strategy. Conversely, I have around a 1.12 k/d which is I’d say average. However, I can hold my own against the best, and especially in recent months, more often than not come out with either “MVP” or at least the best score on my team. Of course, there is the occasional “beast” that simply wipes the floor with everyone, but often its a lucky game. I’ve been called a beast no-lifer on several occasions when I had an incredible game and been called a scrub when I just couldn’t get it together. Also, My kd isn’t amazing but my assists are quite numerous. (About 1/5 as many assists as kills) so there’s that.
If your getting more kills than deaths then it doesn’t matter. A positive K/D is a good K/D.
If it’s an Objective game, a positive K/D shows that yeah, your killing the other team, and the dead enemies equals less enemies going for the Objective. Always a good thing.
But the Objective is more important and takes priority. It’s not unusual at all for a team to all mostly go negative in an Objective game and still win. So K/D takes a backseat there but is still generally important.
As for a judgement of player skill;
0.0 - 0.7: Poor
0.8 - 1.2: Average
1.3 - 1.6: Good
1.7 - 2: Very good
2.1 - 2.4: Excellent
2.5+: Too damn high.
So according to these charts, I am GOD TIER. :3

Welcome to Waypoint as well, but please post here with a nice, well thought-out introduction, so we can get to know you better.
K/D means nothing.
K/D definitely isn’t everything.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t care about KD. I like winning and killing and who likes dying? Of course I want to have a good KD. I don’t get too hung up on it though.
Having a good KD doesn’t always mean that person is a great player. Some people just get their KD up in objective games and others just aren’t team players at all.
What makes a good player to me is someone who kills more than they die, helps out team mates, and goes for or defends the objectives.
I probably agree with xReece’s K/D chart.
.80-1.00 is average and anything about 1.00 is good. If you at least have a 1.00 KD it means you’re killing more than you’re dying.
I personally like being in the 1.50-2.00 range. But that’s just me.
I would argue the best indicator of a player’s skill is their kill/assist/death ratio, since it shows how involved they are in kills. Win/loss is also a hit or miss indicator, since it can either indicate a good team player or a booster.

Only if god plays nearly as nothing but a camping human in Alpha Zombies.

I’m at about a 1.1 so I’m about an average killer, but I prefer to be a team player in MM. Forgetting about stats and just doing what it takes to win the game.

No offense but this is nonsense. Getting a good sense of someones skill requires looking at many statistics since there are many ways to boost k/d. Camping weapon spawns, vehicle spawns, camping with the shotgun, and playing with a clan against a group of randoms to name a few.
Always check weapon k/d and playlist k/d. An excellent player can have poor k/d if they only play team objective.
