Many people talk about K/D as the primary stat, but with assist tracking it might be possible to come up with something that better describes a player.
How do you factor it in? At a glance or mathematically? Are assists important to you?
It is great to get points for assists in game, but what do assists say about a player? and how should they be weighted with K/D? Has someone used this to create a player rating? Does Halo4 currently consider it in the underlying “hidden” match making system?
Please share your thoughts and the info you might know. Thanks
Assists are important, just like kills are. I figured that if i put shots into someone but they got away and run into my team mates, then they can go for the easy kill rather than having to fight it out and possibly lose. An assist is recognition of that and the faster the other guy dies, the faster victory comes.
Not everyone can be a main slayer. It’s something to strive yes but its okay not to be mini Gamesager or Ogre 2 with +30 k/d after every game. Don’t go -17 if you can help it, it really drags your team down ;/ Hold your own but in the end, have fun
At least the assists are rewarded more in this game. In the past Halos, i put enough effort into dropping fools into absolute and no assist >.<.
my slayer k/d is 1.54 while my ka/d is 2.32. people just follow me around stealing as many kills as they can without doing any teamshooting, welcome to halo 4.
my dominion (most played playlist) k/d is 3.4 while my ka/d is 3.95. it is hard to steal kills from a wraith.
Thanks for the replies. I think assists are important and never cry about people “stealing” kills. As far as I’m concerned they aren’t your kill til they are dead. The faster the opponent dies the faster your team can move to the next player keeping everyone alive longer.
I do loath people who -Yoink- assassinations, however. I understand some are accidents but the intentional ones are as low as EMPing team vehicles.
My K/D is decent and I’ve noticed my assist count catching my death count. I would love to see it pass deaths.
I like getting assists, it makes me feel like im helping the team by doing so since it adds more points to the tally for a single kill. Im one of those players who doesnt mind popping a few shots off at someone from range to make them change position or hide behind cover. If someone then gets an easier kill thanks to my actions, then thats a bonus.
To the guy saying that half of the assist were kills stolen right in front of him:
Other people will say that about your kills as well, when they get an assist to your kill.
K/D ratio should be 1 on average for all players together (when you don’t include suicides). Adding assists means that one death can result in both kills and assists, meaning that the average will never be 1 again.
It kind of loses all meaning like that.
Just think for everytime someone steals your kill and you get an assist, you’ve done the same to someone else and stolen their kill.
It is entirely pointless to factor assists into KDR.
Why? Because it just raises the average.
“My KDR is 1.0 but because of assists its actually 1.5”
That’s cool bro, but some guy with a 2.0 KDR now has a 3.0 KDR because he factored in assists.
It doesn’t make you look any better, it just raises the standard for everyone.
Not that KDR isn’t a stupid and incredibly flawed system anyways, but that’s a topic for another thread.
You wanna know a good way to gauge a player? Watch them play for an extended period of time, don’t look at meaningless stats on paper that are easily farmed. I remember back in my Halo PC days I’d recruit players that were kicking my -Yoink- on a daily basis.
I don’t factor in assists at all. You have to to consider that about every time you assisted someone in a kill someone assisted one of your kills (even if it doesn’t feel like it).

I play like this too. If I can see you, I’m putting shots on you. I think my K/D is about 1.21 right now and my KA/D is 1.83 or something. I play mostly 4v4 slayer.
Personally I think assists should be weighted at the same rate as kills. My wife is an amazing assistant. Her kills may only be 4-7 a match but her assists range from 18-24. This doesn’t mean she is a poor player but just better at backing ppl up.
This is and always will be a team game and assisting is just as important as getting the kill. It makes winning and surviving much easier. Increasing assists worth to match that of kills would promote better team play, IMO.
I use Gunner all the time. With a detached turret I am an assist machine. Anybody teammate following me around with a DMR is almost gaurunteed a killing spree.
Since I use the AR in Team Slayer, I often get more assists than kills. I have to risk my -Yoink- getting up close and personal with an enemy and pop his shields, then a teammate usually decides to put one round into his head from halfway across the map in his safety spot. I’m starting to think that people just wait for kills to steal.
I think assists are properly valued in the game and I don’t begrudge people stealing my kills unless of course I’m assassinating someone. As long as our team is winning I don’t really care.
Actually I’m usually glad to see someone focusing fire on my target because it lets me know somebody’s got my 6.
