Confused because punching people while in the air has been kind of important. How do you do that if ground pound is on the melee button now?
You have to hold the melee button to use the ground pound while you can tap it for the melee hit/assassination.
Just like (for the controls I use) X is to reload, but if you are close to a vehicle, you hold X and you get in the driver seat. Most likely something like this:
Both players facing each other in air (no assassination possible): Tap melee button and do a melee, holding melee will prompt ground pound animation (if high enough)
One player exposing back to other player, in air (assassination possible): Either tap melee button to do simple assassination, or hold melee button when a melee is possible to do an Air assassination
When a melee is not possible (players are not close enough to each other) and player is in the air: Tap melee button to punch the air, hold melee button to prompt ground pound
ALSO remember that you get kicked out of the Ground pound animation if you are not high enough
I just wasn’t sure because it’s always been tap to melee and hold to assassinate. I hope it doesnt get too confusing. Probably better than holding in stick though.

That last statement. Simply jumping up shouldnt launch the ground pound animation

If you hold melee while jumping it will launch the ground pound animation and either cut it off if you are not high enough, or allow you to do it, which is what we are talking about. Never said anything about just jumping triggers the ground pound animation
Maybe they took out air assassinations. Sounds like a small price to pay for a better control scheme
I think if you tap the button you punch, and need to hold it down to GP.
