Pre-orders of Halo Wars 2’s Ultimate Edition are being release “early” compared to the standard version of the game.
This is I believe a first for Halo - for the Halo 5 Collector’s edition I believe you got the stuff early, and could pre-install the game but couldn’t play it.
Is this a good thing? Bad thing? Meh thing?
I got this for Battlefield 1, and I definitely felt like I had the early edge on some players. Obviously, over time that wore off, but multiplayer wise I almost felt like I had a bit of an unfair advantage at first.

This is a new trend, formerly the Limited editions of games included in-game customization items as well as some physical knick-knacks in the packaging (stickers, patches, banners, maps, art books, etc). Now we largely still get the in-game customization items but the physical goodies have been replaced with “play 4 days early” and the season pass for said game. I think the tradeoff from a value perspective is equal but I personally miss the days of stickers, patches, banners, maps, and art books being included in the limited editions rather than now being exclusive to the $150+ version of the game.
All that said, I am really looking forward to playing Halo Wars 2 next Friday.
Definitely a fan of this.
Normally the special editions have one or 2 good things with a bunch of OK gimmicks.
Early access, all DLC, Halo wars definitive edition, (I 100% a while ago)
This is a legit Ultimate edition for a game that is more than worth its 20 bucks extra price tag
I usually wouldn’t mind early access, but in this situation there is something that seems off:
The majority of mentions involving the official release date for this game mention the date for the ultimate edition players. Even Halo wars 2 live, something that they do on the day prior to release day, is happening on the day before the ultimate editions release. Given how much this edition has been pushed it feels more like players of the regular edition are rather being held back for not purchasing the ultimate edition, given how the release activities have been planned. But hey, that’s just an opinion.

I definitely see where you’re coming from. It’s also a bit telling IMO that they decide to release the game on a Friday rather than a Tuesday - releases on Fridays just always made more sense to me, because then your average gamer has the weekend to play the game instead of days in the middle of the week.
Maybe this is the transition into higher prices for video games. The market has been stuck at $60 for nearly 15 years now, and with basic inflation the prices should hike at some point in time. Maybe this is it?

That’s probably because they are.
From a marketing perspective, it makes sense to do the live shows before the release of the “first” wave of editions are officially released as well as push the more expensive version of them.

The ultimate edition is only 20$ more than the standard edition and comes with the definitive edition of the first game and the season pass so it doesn’t bother me, everyone should be able to get the ultimate edition because how cheap it is so it really doesn’t bother me.

It is actually just a late release to everyone else. If the game is out then that is its normal time regardless what spin is put on it.
Also a bad thing.

Perhaps
the ultimate edition is basically the complete edition if you buy the standard your missing out on a campaign and new leaders its basically half the final game. basically a reduced version.
this is the first game i have not met personally someone who bought the standard edition. everyone i have met basically knew the ultimate was basically the complete edition.
