So I hate making excuses, but recently (past 4-5 days) it’s been absolutely awful. I play a lot of shotty snipes, and I feel like shotgun is shooting freaking cotton balls. My bullets lul them into a gentle sleep, because at best, when in close range I can knock their shields down. Only about once every 8-9 close range fights do I get a one shot kill with the shot gun, yet the ratio is almost the opposite for the enemy (I’ve been keeping tally)… Am I doing something wrong? Is there something with the shot gun that I don’t know?
I know to shoot the head, and my accuracy isn’t the issue (in Shotty snipes, my average accuracy is high 60s to mid 80s depending on how good I feel). But it’s absolutely infuriating because I feel like I can’t use that gun for the game.
I haven’t tried aiming down the sights, IDK if that changes anything, but if anyone can explain why I can’t one shot a guy when I’m directly above them, and they don’t know I’m there, that’d be much appreciated.
Take my advice. I’m level 150 and studied all the weapons and attachments if it adds any credibility to my statement. Aim down sights if they’re not point blank. Aiming down sights tightens the spread of the projectiles, and also extends the damage fall off for longer 1 hit kills and much longer 2 hit kills. ADS has the same effect on the scattershot as well. This effect is even greater on the lawgiver and blaze of glory REQ shotguns too.
I’ve noticed a similar issue with Energy Swords. When i asked the community they said that internet connection plays a big part, and being located on Hawai’i, I’m very much a victim of internet connection speeds.
I hate being that loser who says “OMG lag” though. I’ve grown up viewing those people as being no better than spawn campers.

Yeah I hear what you’re saying but it’s probably a bit harsh to put those with connectivity issue in the same bag as spawn campers! Anyway just sounds like a familiar lag issue when shots don’t register properly but the other teams do which is frustrating. I live a long way from any servers in my country (4000 kms away!) but normally connect to US players which is like over 15000 kms away and sadly have a pretty good understanding of delay and it’s effects. Hope it gets better for you

Aim down sights with the shotgun, it helps a lot. Aiming down sights increases the range for all weapons. You’ll learn this if you play Breakout 2.0 a lot. When it’s 1v1, the guy who aims down sights with the shotgun always wins. Increased range means increased damage at a further range so you’re more likely to get those one shot kills.
It does it for infection too the shotgun tends to… Get jammed and fire out feathers to tickle your enemy to death
But on a serious note it may be your connection I’ve had lag moments where it does what your talking about except with the energy sword aim down sights might help also
In Halo 5 even Infection I find it that you have to do smart scope to make it effective unless like the guy above me said be at like point blank range because man that thing feels like it has no range.
latency is probably to blame I play from Australia and can get one shot from 20 feet yet have footage of being directly in front and not even dropping shields its very frustrating but hey thats the state of H5 and their horrendous servers !
what the guys said above is true swell about aiming down sights.

See, there is your problem right there!
The Shotgun (and Scattershot too for that matter) shoots SEVERAL pellets, each doing a little damage each and has massive spread but no range fall-off.
This means two things:
Use shotguns at close range. (<-Obvious)
The more of all those several pellets you hit, the more damage you do per shot.
I don’t think the shotgun has more damage for hitting the head in Halo 5. (Honestly haven’t tested it, but I’ve never noticed a difference)
If you aim for the head, however, that means more of the pellets are going to hit air, instead of the actual enemy Spartan.
If you aim for the body, you won’t miss a large portion of your pellets because the area to hit is larger. That also means you can kill from greater distance, because you still do more damage per shot.
What aiming down sights do is tighten the spread of the pellets, again making it easier to hit more of your pellets per shots.
Effectively this enables you to kill from a little more range still.
To sum it all up:
ALWAYS aim down sights.
ALWAYS aim for the body.
Aiming down sights REALLY helps. What I always do is wait until the reticle is red, which is a guaranteed kill for me. Unless lag or they have an overshield.

I’ve been around guns my whole life growing up in a hunting area in Minnesota, and I’m currently in the USMC. I know guns, I promise. I also know that guns don’t always work the same way IN VIDEO GAMES that they do in real life.
Swords work very simply in real life, however energy swords have a heavy reliability on internet connection to determine whether or not it will launch you forward when you strike with one. No amount of real life knowledge of swords would help you know that before hand.
Don’t insult me because you don’t understand the point of my question.

Oh ok, sorry about that.
I do (mostly) know how guns work, but just because I learn from near-realistic games such as Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege.
How are you in the USMC?

Implying that the worst Rainbow Six game is in any way realistic after it introduced zombie aliens to the canon.
Back to op:
The shotguns in this game are weird. Generally speaking, red reticle range should be the kill range of the weapon, and that will increase when aimed down the sights (because thats how guns work)
The base shotgun, at any rate, should require the vast majority of pellets to land on the enemy in order for a kill shot. So if the enemy is half in the total area of the reticle, then it should, logically, kill him.
Unfortunantly, Halo 5 is buggy and laggy, so it rarely works as it should (until it’s used against you), ultimately meaning that you should probably just avoid shotguns all together, as it’s a gamble that will rarely pay off.
