How do Sangheili chew/swallow?

We all know that Sangheili have a strange mouth structure, featuring an upper jaw and 4 “mandibles” instead of a lower jaw. The problem is, even if they could successfully chew food (which would be difficult due to most teeth facing inward), it would just fall out.

There’s also the problem of swallowing. The Sangheili don’t have any tongues, just throats, unless their tongues are only visible when eating. The only way I can see Sangheili being able to eat is sticking food directly into their throats, which would make teeth irrelevant.

They only fix their jaws like that to be intimidating or for preference.(stated somewhere that i can’t remember, cole protocol?) Legends was accurate when it showed them normally having a mouth like ours minus the hinge.

One of the many mysteries of Halo…

You know what, I really don’t know. Really a mystery. I wonder if the third book in the Kilo-Five Trilogy will shed some light on it, like at a scene where a Sangheili and his wife are having dinner and discussing something important related to the book’s story. Really doubt it though

Maybe their mandibles are able to adjust so they have human mouths when they eat and drink and then they have what we see all the time to look intimidating or if they feel more comfortable that way.

I thought that was so the character seemed more sympathetic.

It’s even MORE confusing if you take a look at the Halo 4 Elite design. Their two upper mandibles are like less than an inch from their eyes and look like they’re biting into their own cheeks.

“heir mandibles are able to adjust so they have human mouths when they eat and drink and then they have what we see all the time to look intimidating or if they feel more comfortable that way.”

I am telling you this was already explained and confirmed to be. sadly i don’t remember well enough to tell you WHERE this was stated. hopefully somebody else can.

It was also shown in their reseeding during ORIGINS

Oh. I have really gotta read the Cole Protocol first after I finish my book report (I hate book reports). Then Cryptum, then Evolutions.

I don’t think it’s from The Cole Protocol. Also, Halopedia makes no mention of Elites being able to adjust their mandibles to resemble a regular human jaw, so that source must not be very well-known.

Also, are you referring to this?

yes, and that is very good quality.

I noticed that Reach and Halo 4 Elites actually have a bottom “jaw”, or at least a little flap that can close over their uh, throat-hole. I also noticed that Halo 4 Elites have molars in the back of their mandibles.

For your viewing pleasure

The Combat Evolved Elites had a completely closed jaw, which would make a bit more sense.

I think it’s best to assume that their mandibles are stronger and more flexible than they look.

(I also think Halo Legend’s portrayal of Elite females was abhorrent and unnecessary. They could have easily made her a likable and sympathetic character without making her a giggling anthropomorphic lizard.)

Wellllll hmmm Maby they uses their bottom two mandibles to push the food into their throat mouth thing and they don’t need to chew their food due to powerful stomach acids. I read on the wiki that it was suggested that the mandibles were used to hold small prey earley in the elites evolution. That’s what I’m basing my assumption on.

That’d make their molars unnecessary though

> That’d make their molars unnecessary though

Well, the molars are a very recent addition. That statement that guy is talking about was likely around before the Elite redesign.

Umm the molar point is good though even if it is a recent addition.
Maby when they get food they join thier two mandibles on each side like when they talk in English except they close the opening from the front of the mouth and then chew by making a motion with their connected mandibles… Although that would look pretty wierd

you dont need a tongue to swallow.

They just probably eat space sushi since they are space samurais. So they just shove the small pieces in.

First off, Sangheili ‘do’ have a tongue: it’s mentioned in two of the novels (Cole Protocol and Thursday War) and even shown in concept art and renders in the ‘Art of Halo 4’ book (close approximation of said tongue here: 3d model I did not that long ago).

Second, yeah they gave them molars, but their placement makes them basically useless. Molars are used for crushing food, and their orientation on their mandibles is not correct for said function.

That said, whether or not their mandibles are strong enough for ripping/tearing is up for debate (they honestly don’t ‘look’ like they are strong enough). Most likely modern Sangheili use untinsles(sp) like we do to get the food to the throat, with the tongue helping. They also likely just swallowed some things whole.

Also, in the concept renders, there appears to be a hole near the tip of the tongue: what that is used for has many possibilities, from a built in drinking straw (my theory), to…uh…reproductive functions.

Funny. I actually brought this up in the elite thread earlier but didn’t quite necessarily go brief about it here.

Why can’t this be an avatar picture? One of my favorite scenes from Origins.

@Slaskia Reproductive functions, huh? Do tell.

Hm. It’s possible the molars would be of use if the bottom mandibles were flexible enough to turn parallel to the top jaw, working in tandem with the top mandibles to chew the food and push it into the throat. I can imagine Elites having a very bug-like eating method.

However they do it, Rtas must have a hell of a time.

Imma ask this how do sangheili take baths, stupid qustion but think about it! They have no hair and grunts look dirty! Along with jackles / tivoans!

I think they have special tube like tools to help them eat, the grunts did, but the Jackels are able to eat like birds.
