How Do I Unlock New Avatars For My Profile?

I see a lot of users using avatars that I don’t have in the avatar selection menu. How do I unlock new ones to use? Badges? Forum levels?

There are, however, some people around these forums who have exclusive avatars either by request, or by keeping their pre-update avatars.

Just make sure you don’t start spamming the boards in an effort to rank up. Otherwise all that work will be for naught.
