I’m an average player at best I think, are there tips and strategies that could help me get better?
Pray and practice
YouTube and maybe a Spartan Company.
aim for the head
if theres more than 1 player of the opposing team run the other way unless you know you have a team member behind you.
don’t ground pound unless you have the drop on them, you become a huge target
if you get stuck by plasma grenades, try to get as far away from your team as possible to minimize losses in the detonation (bonus points if you manage to get the person who stuck you with the blast)
Time and practice. People that are better then you are probably simply playing the game more. Think of somebody with “talent” as having a… starting bonus… That they enhance with practice. But if you are stupid and practice more then them you will eventually get better then them.
Practice, practice, and more practice.
I personally don’t want to invest the time into it…
Also try to find your controller sensitivity sweet spot, your “3rd eye”, and maybe get to know spawn locations.
If you want to improve your aim, play swat. Every time I load up halo 5, play a round or two to warm up
Don’t look at your gun reticle, look at the enemy and shoot.

I could start uploading my Arena matches on Waypoint if you’d like.
YouTube helped me a little bit first of all, but it’s really down to practice, finding the best controller settings for you and more practice.
I play on Bumper Jumper sens 3 Look acceleration 3
- Use the left-stick to ‘aim’ almost as much as the right stick! You can make finer adjustments, and moving a little will ensure you’re a trickier target to hit too!
- I found upping the controller sensitivity to 6 (and acceleration to 4) means I can turn quicker in close quarters for melee attacks, but if I go any higher I start overshooting my aim, especially if the situation is hectic.
- Slow your aiming down enough so that you’re hitting the enemies more than the wall
- Find the best player on your team and follow them (or ideally all 4 of you work as a unit if none of you are too shy for chat). You’ll get easier assists, kills, and have a ‘bodyguard’ to boost to and hide behind if your shields get stripped
- Speaking of, if your shield is damaged use boost to get behind cover instead of sprint (if the situation allows it) - you won’t reset your shield regen timer that way.
- Use the the right weapon for your distance to enemies. Don’t start unloading with the SMG if someone’s at the other end of a room. And don’t use the pistol if someone’s up close running circles around you with the Assault Rifle.
- If you’ve made a bad decision to enter a room to find 2 extra baddies you didn’t see, either get out ASAP, but if you can’t, don’t panic and give everyone a little squirt - instead zone in on your ininitial target and try to take him down for one more kill before you get taken out.
My KD ratio isn’t great, but I’m getting better, ans finding the hardest part is breaking out of bad habits!
