I’ve been playing Halo 5 since the beginning, and more recently, I’ve been missing all of my shots with the Magnum and I can’t get a kill with it. Any tips to get better with the Magnum again?
EDIT: As of 11:40 PM EST, I’ve changed the title because now I can’t hit anything.
And please don’t add Git Gud or anything else to this. Thanks!
the only tip i have is to play a lot with it - some people use certain magnum heavy social playlists to practice. Are there any other possible tips? Perhaps you can do custom games
My advice would be to ignore the Smart-Scope function on the magnum for now (it reduces aim assistance, making it harder to aim, as a trade-off for more accuracy over range) and focus on de-scoped shots.
Try not to clench the controller as it makes it harder to make fine movements with the thumbsticks and perhaps even disable vibration as it can affect your hand muscles over time.
Finally, you could always reverse the magnum and pull the trigger, that way you won’t have to worry about practicing.
Try rotating the stick clockwise or counterclockwise to reset your aiming when you get messed up. I do it all the time and hit shots that would be impossible otherwise. You’ll see what I’m talking about once you figure it out.
Practice is really the only way to get better. I’d recommend playing a few matches of the octagon before heading into arena. It’s also a good idea to try to get on every single day to enforce your muscle memory. It doesn’t have to be for a long time. Just get on and play a few matches when you can. I’d also recommend staying away from the BR when you when. If your playing arena and you pick it up off the ground thats fine, but try to avoid playing whole warzone matches with it. You get used to the 3 round burst and it can throw off your shot when you return to the Magnum.
Practice as well as messing with your sensitivity settings. I’m constantly trying to fine tune my sensitivity to get the best accuracy while maintaining stability with some speed. It’s a tough and delicate balance, but I recently found a good setting for me and I have seen my play drastically improve.
try using the AR and just try to trace an opponents path as best you can, set a goal for accuracy.
And for practice, use the gunfighter magnum ( if you have it) and use it at long range where there is no aim assist (reticle is NOT red).
I heard that you should not use a battle rifle, since the 3 round burst can make you lazy with your aim
I’d recommend turning down your sensitivity and using the magnum over the BR. I’ve also heard the gunfighter magnum is also more testing on your accuracy, so I’d try that if you have it unlocked.
As said, you should probably try another sensibility, experiment a bit with the dead-zones would be helpful too. I’d also recommend playing swat, even if you will die incredibly fast it’s really helpful to improve your aiming, in my opinion this playlist is perfect for training (recently I improved a lot thanks to it)
Maybe practice the Magnum shots during the campaign on non shielded enemies to work on headshots and maybe take on one elite to take out his shields with maybe a few shots to the head. You could also try one or two matches in SWAT to use the Magnum against opposing spartan before playing in regular Slayer matches. Hope this helps.
I found that swat greatly improves my first sight aiming reflex (if that makes sense). Unfortunately, I have not been able to find swat matches in my region (Australia) as well as regular arena matches for a really long time to begin with. If i could find arena matches in my region, I would be playing daily-unfortunately the population is too low.
As many have suggested, I set my setting to the lowest setting then bumped them up slowly until I found my sweet spot, now each person’s sweet spot could be different, so you will have to find what works for you. A lot of people have used octagon to sharpen their aiming. My choice was SWAT. The only other thing to add, would be play play play! Good luck Spartan!

Had one coaching session / Octagon with IInclined. He streams on twitch.
Reset all settings on my elite to default, the radial curves, and stick movement was creating havoc with my aim
I believe my h5 controls are both set at 1.
The result my aim has improved at least 7 percentage points. You can see in my game history that my historical magnum accuracy was 50%, but for the season I am at 52% in proving grounds and 57% in slayer.
Aim with the inner portion of the crosshairs. It’s a little tricky at first, but you’ll increase your chances of landing a hit. This also applies with most other weapons, including automatics.
