Their weapons are complete trash in terms of gameplay perspective as everything is at the moment. No way did the UNSC full of Spartan IVs lost to Pulse rifles. Its so bad that the higher ranks Banished use UNSC heavy weapons as their primaries?

I mean, I’d believe it if they said they just beat the UNSC on the Infinity and those supporting it. The UNSC is scattered thanks to Halo 5 Cortana basically locking everything down. The Banished have a lot of forces, this is evident by the ending of Halo Wars 2. But what I’d like to know is where Atriox amassed so many ships. I knew Enduring Conviction wasn’t his only ship in HW 2, but there is no way he just had so many waiting for battle easily within reach.
It was all pre-flight. Before a public build of the game came out the pulse rifle shredded. The target tracking was inescapable. That’s how the banished won. They also used controller, while the UNSC used M&K.

Its important to understand how and why a story is written before you start questioning every sentence or paragraph.
The reality is that you (as the player) are absurdly OP, you can die and respawn, tank lots of hits without suffering serious injuries, and so on. So to you the UNSC are like Gods lol, but the reality is that its not fun being the winner in a story, it wouldn’t be compelling if you were just showing up unannounced to planets and owning everything, so they keep pushing this narrative of UNSC on their last legs and blah blah blah but we all know they’ll just pull a rabbit out of the hat (which is typically MC) and it’ll save humanity or the galaxy, or Cortana, or maybe a cat from a tree…
Ok but I would love to see MC rescue a cat from a tree if I’m being honest-

UNSC lost because they got taken by surprise and couldn’t recover in time to counter and stop the banished forces.
Also, Brutes are known for being very strong and brutal warriors. If Chief struggles a bit fighting them, what’s the chance that a bunch a marines and marines with mjolnir armor could defeat them? Even worse, those brutes were under the command of Atriox himself, they were no joke.
Fun fact: Brutes finds some human weapons very brutal, and they liked them a lot, so that’s why you see them holding human weapons.
