How did Noble 6 visor crack when...

He was shot with plasma. Not bullets.

Assuming that the visor is made of a substance similar to glass (remember that it is the year 2552 and otherworldly materials would have been discovered), the visor cracking would make sense as glass can crack when exposed to really high temperatures. Noble Six’s shields could have held out long enough for the plasma to not fully impact the helmet but for the damage to remain hot enough for the visor to crack.

The trouble is, the circumstances of Six’s death and how you get the cracks in gameplay vary each time. Your visor cracks even if you only get shot in the back from a Grunt’s plasma pistol, or it cracks if an Elite stabs you with his energy sword. Or if a Wraith blows you sky-high with its plasma mortar, or if one of the Elites mans a UNSC machine gun turret and shoots at you. In short, we don’t actually know for sure what damage was dealt to Six to wreck his visor, or even how long the fight canonically lasted.

My theory is that the gameplay damage and the canon damage just aren’t the same, and that Six was duking it out with a bunch of Elites before the end who managed to get in some good melee hits with punches/kicks or energy daggers. Remember the cutscene in Winter Contingency where the Zealot tries to stab you in the face with one? He wasn’t so lucky but maybe another Elite was, if they overwhelmed Six enough.

EDIT: But on the other hand, looking at the screencap at Halopedia (url below) of the canon helmet Six was using, the big hole in his visor looks like it coulda been made by a plasma shot that A. caused heat damage enough to crack/rupture the visor itself and B. burn a hole right through it. So it is possible that one of the Elites in the ending cutscene got him in the face with a plasma rifle. That stuff is maddeningly hot, after all, and the game(s) really don’t show just how awful taking a hit from it would be. A couple hits are supposed to be enough to ruin a Mjolnir Mk IV plate, I think. A Marine or Army trooper would suffer horrific damage just from a glancing shot.

I think it’s simply an artistic question then a technical. Noble 6 visor crack when the end is near, no matter what, where or how it hit him/her.

Funny thing in Star Wars Republic Commando at low health and extreme fire make cracks on the clone trooper visor. But it like splaterrd blood/oil can clean up. If anybody playyed the game knows what I mean.
