How could I have been so stupid

I spent almost all of 2012 getting pumped for this game. Last year, I got MW3 on release date. I usually buy one game on its release date, and when I heard Halo 4 was coming out, I knew what I was getting. I was so excited.

Now that I’ve played it, I completely regret it.
As a classic Halo fan, I expected many things to change, and many things to remain the same, but not on this scale. Purchasing Halo 4 really taught me a lesson: Never buy a game until you’ve heard as much as you can about it from other people, or rented it. I played the first two weeks, and then promptly switched back to Reach (where I’ve been playing for a year and a half and still have not reached anywhere near max rank).

I first played campaign when I got the game, solo on Heroic.
-The levels were all very straightforward. Kill all the enemies here, kill all the enemies there, pull three switches, good job. The maps were so small that turning back around to explore the place was pretty much pointless.
-The campaign maps were littered with invisible barriers
-Campaign was very poorly explained, left MANY loose ends, and there was almost no character development for anyone besides Cortana and MC
-No Scarabs, no Spectre, no Chopper, no Hornet, no Elephants, no Falcon, no new vehicles at all, besides the short ride in a Pelican

Then I played multiplayer, where disappointment really shines:
-BR is reintroduces, turns out to be useless against DMR in almost every situation
-Create-a-Class (I’ll just go play Call of Duty next time.)
-Custom classes, which were hyped up to be extremely customizable, are lacking MANY features of previous games
-No real forging world (!!!)
-Call of Duty based, exp progression system, showing no real skill
-Progression system can be completed in a few weeks
-Actually decent ranking system that probably nobody will want to use anyways isn’t available at launch
-File sharing system, so that we can actually play some custom games, isn’t available at launch
-Full Specialization system isn’t available at launch, and won’t be available to anyone who didn’t play the game before the 20th
-9 playlists. Wow.
-Imbalanced maps (Besides Haven (which gets voted in almost every match) and Ragnarok, which 343i didn’t even originally develop)
-No ability to veto the selection of maps

I’m sure there’s plenty I missed. I play every once in a while when my friends want me to, but I play Reach. At first, I worried that I would have to get the Xbox 720 to play Halo 5 next year, but now, I don’t think it’ll be so bad that I don’t get the console. Hopefully, I can find my receipt for Halo 4 and trade it in for Black Ops II, which is essentially what Halo 4 is, plus a zombies mode that Halo had going pretty good with Firefight. And given that 343i probably can’t change 80% of the problems brought forth in this game, or is unwilling to, I don’t have time to wait around for a month, two months, or more, for something that isn’t going to happen. I miss playing Fat Kid and Trash Compactor on Foundry back in Halo 3, and I fear that I won’t ever get a chance to do so.

I’m sure the entire population of this forum is going to come in this thread, read half of the post, and make assumptions and say things like “you should adapt” and “deal with it” and “go back to Halo 3 if you’re so mad.” “Halo” has lost a customer.

agreed, good analysis

you bring up some good points. I was just like you when the game came out, my k/d in reach was 2.5 and when I started playing this game it dropped to a 2.0. But it is slowly increasing because I learned how to adapt. In halo reach, close quarters combat was encouraged, in this game, I distance myself from enemies due to a very powerful AR and that is why I use the DMR over a BR. It’s a totally different game. once you adapt to it, it can be very enjoyable. Wouldn’t want a halo reach 2 after all or we’d be just like the COD series of repetition.

Thanks for reading, I expected an argument to ensue on the first post

Yes, I know I eventually will get used to it. But my problem was with the way they carried out the changes in the game, they were simply too drastic, we were rather blindsighted. It just doesn’t feel like Halo to me. Reach was the beginning, I had just hoped that they would have fixed what Reach did when they made 4.

I also doubted it at first, but once you put some real playtime into it and get used to things, you’ll find its pretty good. Don’t let the forums -Yoink!- your opinion, give it a fair shot. Not saying there aren’t things to be fixed but this game isn’t half as broken as most claim it to be.

I played hard. I’m level 58, which was extremely easy to reach. And I’m sure that the level of things that are wrong with the game varies from person to person. It’s just what I’ve noticed. And maybe I will change my mind. But I don’t see that happening any time soon. After all, it turns out I’m stuck with the game, as I can’t take it back to Gamestop to get an item of equal value.

Don’t worry about what any fanboy-defense-force will say (the unreasonably abusive disagreers). In my experience, any person who enjoys Halo 4 is in the vast minority. Everyone I know or have heard of who bought this game outside of this forum hates it, save for a couple who play it begrudgingly.
…and they just think that it’s okay at most

I kept trying to find out if this was an isolated experienced, asked the forum for data, but they wouldn’t give me any. shrug They got awful quiet.

I bet you weren’t all that fond of Halo:Reach when it first came out.

Omgz only 9 playlists derp, heard of change? a few more will be added, one or two will be removed.

Some points you made are good, but remember its just the first month this game has been out, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Keep the game, tune in once in awhile to see any changes you are satisfied with and get back into playing Halo 4.

People like you i’d like to call Nostalgia Idiocy.

Yes, two of my friends (who competed in professional tournaments back in 3) who also got the game on launch date shared a similar opinion with me, saying that it was ‘okay’ at best. Aesthetically, they think the game is good, but in the gameplay aspects, it is definitely lacking. I met several people who were trying to sell the game, only two weeks after it came out, and I was shocked, because I was still enjoying it, before I started to see any shortcomings.

  1. Stop trying to make people sound stupid by adding OMGZ, ZOMG, DERP, etc. to what they have said.

  2. They’ve had 3-4 years to work on the game.

  3. It not nostalgia. Otherwise we would simply go back to playing Halo 2 or 3.
The game plays too differently for some people, strays to far off from the original “formula”.

Just return it as I am going to.

Also special note*

There are really only like 5 playlists as - Oddball, CTF and King of the Hill should all be in the ‘Team Objective’ playlist.

I think 343 spread them out to look like their pathetic playlist count wasn’t even that much more pathetic.

Thank you for reading my mind.

Yup! …you’re right.

I can’t take anything you say seriously with that screen name lol. Anyway ive been playing the game like crazy, its just fun. I dont have a ton of time to devote to it and like ya said its experience system can be done pretty quick. I dont play a ton and I am almost rank 69 thanks to spartan ops and tons of bigteam.

But for taking over the halo mantle they did a pretty good job on their first try. Bungie started with Halo CE and got better and better as the halos evolved. With them getting all the feedback they are I am really excited to see what they could do on the next one. Ehh just my thoughts on the subject though.

Cheers

Yes!
I can’t even comprehend why 343 will leave out Grifball, Swat, Snipers, Rocket Race, and other playlists that would be VERY popular, and instead put in trash playlists that get played by MAYBE 2000 players at a peak point of the day. They already can see that Swat and Snipers have more players than every playlist excluding Slayer and Big Team. Yet, Snipers is still going to be removed.

Nice insult, despite the fact that I and many others would Happily play Halo 2 if the servers were still Live and Halo 3 if the population was stronger?

It’s not down to “Nostalgia” it’s down to what we find entertaining. I still love those games, this game infuriates me beyond belief. The fact that I have considered trading the game is a bad sign. It would be the first Halo for me to trade in, Ever.

See, I wish people would be more reasonable like you, if it was anyone else, they would come in with their disagreement along with insults and ad hominem. I do disagree with what you said about the mantle being passed along effectively to 343. I feel like instead of making improvements to a classic system from previous games, they took it WAY too far. If anything, they should have started with small changes, and added on based on feedback, not vice versa. I can only hope they can fix things.

  1. Most of the complainers on these forums are idiots.

  2. Yes, 3-4yrs to make a game, but do you understand that it takes outside gamers to help shape & refine it? Yeah, yeah we got no Beta, but the game hasn’t even been out for a month yet.

  3. It is Nostalgia. You know what nostalgia is right?
