I spent almost all of 2012 getting pumped for this game. Last year, I got MW3 on release date. I usually buy one game on its release date, and when I heard Halo 4 was coming out, I knew what I was getting. I was so excited.
Now that I’ve played it, I completely regret it.
As a classic Halo fan, I expected many things to change, and many things to remain the same, but not on this scale. Purchasing Halo 4 really taught me a lesson: Never buy a game until you’ve heard as much as you can about it from other people, or rented it. I played the first two weeks, and then promptly switched back to Reach (where I’ve been playing for a year and a half and still have not reached anywhere near max rank).
I first played campaign when I got the game, solo on Heroic.
-The levels were all very straightforward. Kill all the enemies here, kill all the enemies there, pull three switches, good job. The maps were so small that turning back around to explore the place was pretty much pointless.
-The campaign maps were littered with invisible barriers
-Campaign was very poorly explained, left MANY loose ends, and there was almost no character development for anyone besides Cortana and MC
-No Scarabs, no Spectre, no Chopper, no Hornet, no Elephants, no Falcon, no new vehicles at all, besides the short ride in a Pelican
Then I played multiplayer, where disappointment really shines:
-BR is reintroduces, turns out to be useless against DMR in almost every situation
-Create-a-Class (I’ll just go play Call of Duty next time.)
-Custom classes, which were hyped up to be extremely customizable, are lacking MANY features of previous games
-No real forging world (!!!)
-Call of Duty based, exp progression system, showing no real skill
-Progression system can be completed in a few weeks
-Actually decent ranking system that probably nobody will want to use anyways isn’t available at launch
-File sharing system, so that we can actually play some custom games, isn’t available at launch
-Full Specialization system isn’t available at launch, and won’t be available to anyone who didn’t play the game before the 20th
-9 playlists. Wow.
-Imbalanced maps (Besides Haven (which gets voted in almost every match) and Ragnarok, which 343i didn’t even originally develop)
-No ability to veto the selection of maps
I’m sure there’s plenty I missed. I play every once in a while when my friends want me to, but I play Reach. At first, I worried that I would have to get the Xbox 720 to play Halo 5 next year, but now, I don’t think it’ll be so bad that I don’t get the console. Hopefully, I can find my receipt for Halo 4 and trade it in for Black Ops II, which is essentially what Halo 4 is, plus a zombies mode that Halo had going pretty good with Firefight. And given that 343i probably can’t change 80% of the problems brought forth in this game, or is unwilling to, I don’t have time to wait around for a month, two months, or more, for something that isn’t going to happen. I miss playing Fat Kid and Trash Compactor on Foundry back in Halo 3, and I fear that I won’t ever get a chance to do so.
I’m sure the entire population of this forum is going to come in this thread, read half of the post, and make assumptions and say things like “you should adapt” and “deal with it” and “go back to Halo 3 if you’re so mad.” “Halo” has lost a customer.
