HOW COME HE DIDN'T DIE!!!!!

I hear this shouted across the airwaves a lot. Even I after a well placed grenade and a headshot though still results in my death and not my opponents I have murmmered this. so…

HOW COME HE DIDN’T DIE???

That happened to me last night. I have Verizon FIOS too. I also played Grifball with lag dancing Spartans. We lost.

it always seems to affect the whole team. we always party up and we are very capable players. even if there seems to be no obvious lag. we have games like wtf is happening?

Probably him (her?) using the 'Splosives perk and strafing.
Did you use a BR? Missing targets can occur if you spread the bullets while an enemy strafes.

In regular combat I don’t really notice this but grifball seems to make it more pronounced (because of the slow hammer attack).

Obviously some games just lag to hell, but in terms of the games that look absolutely fine:

Between games my ability to time hits definitely doesn’t vary that much. But some games I’ll lose encounters constantly where I’d usually have won them. And then in other games you can tell the opponents must be experiencing the same.

The range at which you can pull the trigger and get the kill varies massively from game to game depending on the latency even when the game looks completely smooth.

My connection is poor btw.

Amen, bro.
Grifball has always been a pain.
People have longer reaches and seem to hit two times as fast as you do.
Most interesting thing:
You can immediately tell who’s the host while playing Grifball.

I’ve noticed with the AR in some games a player can seem to kill further back of mid range as opposed to close mid and out performing the br.

He didn’t die because he was packing a ballistic undersuit and lined helmet, DOHHHH!!!

Your internet does not wholly dictate your experience.

It is determined by the sum of other players. Especially whoever gets host.

Also remember you can have the fastest internet in the world and still have terriple ping. Ping being the most important part of the game as a 512k connection is more than enough to play peer to peer games of 16 players online.

Lag most likely, the netcoding and connections are horrible in halo 4…
I swear it just randomly picks a host, not the best player for the game…

Actualyl it’s far worse than that.

H4 uses the “Host History”. If you were ever host, and there was lag for the players, then you have a bad host rating and will likely never get host again. The problem is, if a new player starts playing H4, they have no rating so they preferentially get host. So if you check the SR rating, the bottom 1/4 of the players with the lowest SR rating will get host - whereas if you played lost of games, your likely excluded host forever.

Other games (Halo Reach, COD II for example) do ping and bandwidth tests of the players in the lobby - then selects the best host for that game.

If you want to read about just how this affects your games check this actual case out:

I have quit playing H4 and switched back to Reach because of this crap - which 343I has had 8 months to fix - hasn’t and they left us hung out to dry as they move onto to H5 and Xbox One.

Unless this gets fixed in H4, I will not buy H5 and therefore won’t need an Xbox One either - so the balls in your court 343i and MS - fix it or I switch to another platform for the next 5 years.

You do know the next Halo game on the Xbox One will use dedicated servers, right? It seems silly to bail from Halo based off a poor peer to peer experience when the next installment will use something completely different.

Any number of reasons. Namely, weapon spread because it’s cool to not have weapons that shoot straight. Or, a very ill timed lag spike. You can kill one guy a few seconds before your current enemy, and the current will just refuse to die. If you think you get bullcrap, I’ve been in melee battles where we’ve both melee’d something like 5 times. No damage to each other at all, and yet we’re still completely responsive and aren’t lagging to each other. I mean…when that happens, I myself shout “WHY GOD WHYYYY”.

What you described happens to me from time to time. Except when I get host. BWAhaha

Those deaths you get when you have a person one shot, hear the sound of your shots go off at the time you die.

It’s like where did my bullets go? It was centered on my face, and I heard my gun shoot. Even if you were slightly behind, you should still get that kill.

Yep. the Host system makes trying to be competitive pointless. In grifball when your opponent swings he will win if he’s the host because your action is delayed. Not to mention when he realizes his power he typically goes on a spawn killing rampage. That’s crap and I will not play under those conditions.

This applies to the entire matchmaking experience to BTW. If your host you have a response advantage - your shots will connect quicker and more accurately. If your not host then you will have a delay and thus miss shots even if it looks like you connected. As if this game didn’t have enough problems. It’s complete BS.

Basically I feel like I can account to doing badly or great to either having host or not. Of course that’s not always the case but how are we supposed to tell? You can blame a bad game to you not having host. You can discount another players great game by saying he had host. Fun right?

Anyone ever get those people that melee range like the sword? Yet when I try to melee, I have next to no melee range.

This has been infuriating me ever since Reach. I miss the closest melees, yet they get me from the same range or even further.

It’s like the game put magnets on me to be the punching bag.

Got a bunch of those playing Shotty Snipers today. So damn annoying when you pull the Shotgun trigger square on your enemy and die right as you fire.

It is because of two reason: one she or he is better at placing their shoots and they have better internet connection so their shoots register before yours and you die. In my case I am a bad shoot so even my good internet connection can not save me most time. hope this helps. Come shoot me sometime, cheers.

Microsoft has promised dedicated servers before, and didn’t give them. (Gears 3 is one example.)

Dedicated servers is the biggest empty promise. You’re guaranteeing a game that won’t come out for 17 months will have it? Where do you guys come up with this stuff?

Halo 4 should play better, and doesn’t. Halo 5? No thanks.
