How can visable rank cause cheating?

I don’t get it, 343 said that your rank will be hidden to prevent cheating. How do you cheat??? I haven’t seen any cheating with it.

please, can anyone answer

Here’s what Frankie has to say about 1-50.

The cheating is from people buying accounts that have a high rank that was not earned so that they could scare people in the lobby.

I’m not talking about skill level that’s another one of my threads, you’re in the wrong thread

It invisible to discourage cheating, not to prevent it. There are going to be cheaters in any system but if it’s invisible what’s the point?

Why does it need to be visible though? I don’t see how this affects competitive matchmaking? If the system does its job and matches players correctly then there will be a competitive environment.

Really? Is it that big of a problem that they hide ranks? I might be like “wow thats a high rank” but if they suck at halo rank isnt going to change anything

Player since 7/2/11.

That would be why.

You missed out on all the people who were banned for challenge resets, automating Target Locator Farming on Swordbase, the posts against the Rating System from people who were teamkilling to raise their own score. You also missed out on all the people using the two’s trick in Arena right now.

You also missed out on the derankers in H3, the people standbying, grabbing host, etc.

That’s why you haven’t seen anyone cheat.

Yes it will. The system pairs people with ranks close to theirs. When people start to have ranks they don’t deserve, it degrades the integrity of the system as a whole.

The only people you would brag about your rank to would be your friends, so I don’t see why invisible ranks are a problem either. It’s not like if you told your friend you were a Captain he’s going to respond with “PICS OR IT DIDN’T HAPPEN!”.

> Why does it need to be visible though?

Incentive. It is what drives competitive players. Lack of incentive really harms competitive matchmaking - look at Arena.

Please don’t mention Halo 3’s derankers again. I’m not sure if I can control myself…

I play almost every day and I have all of the Halo games, and I dont see any cheating though rank ( i do see boosting though)

Please do not bump your posts in the future.

And the only way to witness cheating would have been to play halo 3 in its glory days. The matchmaking system of 1-50 ranks, or trueskill’ was horribly exploitable. people would boost high levels, de-rank themselves to fight those lower than them and always win, and worst of all. account selling. People would raise accounts to the highest level, then sell those accounts to others. Some people would wish to deny these this were serious, but there was more than enough of it for bungie to remove in in halo Reach. It just ruined the game for anybody who couldn’t get legit 40s-50s.

In halo 4, your rank will be visible. however, it will ony be visible to you; nobody else can see your rank. this is the best medium for all, as it till gives you a goal to pursue, yet cuts down drastically on the abuse.

I never said I have never saw cheating!!! I said I’ve never seen cheating though rank. stop putting words in my mouth

I used to play TF2 a lot, and the game never offered any sort of incentive to win, but people tried anyway.

You don’t need a reward to be encouraged to win, simply being acknowledged as the victor is enough for some people.

For some people. I’m okay with being acknowledged as the victor, at least a few times. But when I get a lot of wins and nothing to show for it, it gets pretty repetitive. It could look like I’m at the same level as someone who’s playing their 5th game of Halo ever.

> You don’t need a reward to be encouraged to win, simply being acknowledged as the victor is enough for some people.

True - some people won’t mind. Then there are the thousands that will mind, and will abandon the playlist just like they did Arena. I think it is safe to say the majority do mind when comparing Halo 3 populations to Reach populations.

Not trying to make this a Halo 3 vs Reach thread, just giving my two cents.

Counter-Strike is a very competitive game, yet there is no ranking system or reward. Both CS and TF2 are multiplayer powerhouses, yet they have no reward for winning.

The reason is because we’re a very competitive species. How many times have you challenged your friends to a foot race, without there being any sort of reward other than bragging rights? We don’t need any reward for winning either than victory itself.

By the way, Reach’s population counter told how many players were on per hour, not per day.

In Reach’s prime, it had 500,000+ unique players a day.

If the system matches players correctly then the incentive should be to win amongst your peers of skill, not to have a stupid number or symbol next to your name. Comments like yours makes me think it’s not about competition with you guys.
