How can Spartan Locke be a better character?

He could die.

> I won’t say he really needs improving… It’s just that his voice always seemed kinda monotonous. He didn’t really sound like he had any emotions, unlike his team members. I realize Chief was kinda like this in CE-3, but he did sound like he had some emotions. Locke… Ehhh… Maybe not as much. Though, to be fair, Locke has only had one game, while Chief has had five.

Chief only ever showed emotions in h4 and h5 since 343 took over. I don’t think people can really play the “Locke sounds boring card” lol. I also agree it’s unfair to Locke cuz Chiefs had more games, the arbiter back in h2 was in the same spot as Locke is now.

By being removed from any part of any halo content be it canon or non canon.

> Locke shares many character traits with the Master Chief so it shouldn’t be to hard for 343 to improve his character, I think it literally is just a case of we shouldn’t be hostile to his character just because he is a potential threat to Master Chief.
> We need to give him a fair amount of time for his character and motives to be shown, if he is still not likable after all that then by all means the hate is justified.

The end of halo 5 was so open there’s a lot potential to improve locke

He must die in Halo 6 and ONI should experiment with his brain to make an AI of last generation to fight against cortana and help John.

Yes banshee crashing should definitely be a win

How about show him how he became a Spartan then show like what he was good at like was he a top marksman in his class or what?

Having him die valiantly in the intro to Halo 6 saving some space kittens, then replacing him with Thorne, Buck, or since the politically correct brigade want more female main characters just use Palmer. She’s hardly the best option out there but with her story established with Halo 4, Spartan Ops, a prequel comic, “Spartan Ops 2” essentially in comic form, and Spartan Assault, that’s at least a bit easier to do.

Every character in Osiris has a story and certain characteristics that they constantly show- if you pay attention.
People just dismissed Locke as this nobody who’s taking up Chief’s place, but they never really gave him a chance and never took the time to actually listen to what the character says, what he does and why.

I do agree that Chief>Locke, but Locke isn’t THAT bad.
This is his first appearance in the games, give them some time to fully develop the character

Jul’s death wasn’t even cool. He was supposed to be this BA villain and they just killed him off in the first mission of Halo 5. It is literally a lame end to what should have been a cool villain set up in game. Had it been followed through I would agree.

Yea he helped rescued Arbiter who was basically withstanding a siege with a small handful of men by themselves. That’s cooler. Locke was more or less the relief to make sure they didn’t get overrun just how I see it.

Yea he cracked Chief’s visor and Chief then proceeded to beat the piss out of him and use his own plan against him. Not really good given the while context. It was more of a lucky shot then anything else.

> Locke has good characteristics, 343i just needs to do a better job of bringing them to the surface. He was only a soldier in Halo 5, the story rarely got personal with him. Fireteam Osiris deserves a spinoff game, where they don’t play the majority role in a conflict that is not their fight.

This. We only saw Osiris (well besides Buck) in the EU and comics. Brian Reed and the other writers then just decided that if they just threw them into the game we wouldn’t need any context and it would be completely okay. We all know what happened. Problem is that we got a lot of new characters all at once for people who don’t follow the expanded universe (a lot of people, myself included for the most part) and they had zero development in game. I spent almost all of Osiris’ missions wishing Vale and Tanaka would stop talking and waiting for Locke to just take on his generic commander voice.

Wasted opportunity really.

Yea except they just looks so forced since they literally just appeared in the games and it makes them look cliché. Vale’s the smart one. Tanaka was the one traumatized growing up by the previous war, and Buck is the guy who wisecracks all the time with Locke as their fearless leader. When they basically only show those traits I take it as the characters being one trick ponies and not fleshed out characters. Buck is the only character to ever really deviate from his trait and that’s because most people know Buck.

Yeah, I’m aware of how Reach works, who Noble 6 is, and how Bungie writes their characters so bland that they could be replaced by Doom Guy or Gordon Freeman mid-game and no one would even notice.

But yeah, I get it what you’re saying: wear your armor in campaign. It was a cool thing to have in Reach. But as far as I’m concerned, without campaign theater, this is pointless … because you can’t take cool pictures :frowning:

The reason I disliked Locke was because he was a person but didn’t have a defining trait, most characters in the Halo universe offer something to dialogue and the events in the game.
Chief in the first 3 games was very quiet and only speaking when he needed to so that the player could identify with him, in Halo 4 you see how damaged he actually is especially when Cortana goes rampant. A brilliant scene is when Cortana is explaining how if they do find Halsey the Cortana he’ll get back won’t be her. You can see him wandering around playing his gun and not knowing how to react. They ruined this in Halo 5 by making him go back to how he was in the first 3 games. They should bring this back.
Thel Vadame (The Arbiter) was also a cool character because he showed the player that even this monster you were fighting were not actually monsters but people who were just wanting a better life by being in the Covenant. Even though he was essentially sent on suicide missions you can see that he is trying to redeem himself by performing these great feats and hoping he’ll be remembered. Another thing that was awesome was that he was at the centre of the whole Covenant civil war and that no matter how many times the Prophets tried to get him killed on his missions he just wouldn’t quit and eventually assisted with the downfall of the Covenant. You rooted for him.
I personally thought Buck would’ve been a much better leader for Osiris as he retains a lot of the humour that the previous games had, Locke is currently just a watered down version of Chief in the first 3 games. Buck is brilliant because he is by far the most experienced in Osiris but he is super clumsy and doesn’t take many things seriously. For Locke to be a lovable character like Chief and Buck he needs to have a defining goal or trait. They need to give him something that makes you want to support him.

By killing him off. Easy.

Probably just through time.

If locke do missions alone, or you stop using the character in a different style , it would show its potential , as the Master Chief in the previous sagas , it would be another thing to be a more intimidating character , because it looks like a soldier who follows orders and has a very original style as such

Locke needs a better situation to be written in. As of right now, he has been shown in two pretty bland stories, and in one he has had to compete with the other team members of Osiris for recognition, specifically Buck, who does a pretty good job of stealing the show most of the time, as an already pretty established fan favorite.

While people hated the Arbiter ( I didn’t, I loved that they introduced him ) …He really only had to compete with the Chief and Shipmaster, and his story arc was dynamic. We saw his downfall, rise, betrayal, and redemption, all during the backdrop of the Great Schism.

I think that the downplayed Hunt, the lack of ONI evil, and political intrigue that we got in HTT and the ad campaign would have created a much better backdrop for Locke’s introduction into the game. I never really got the feel that “Every soldier is going to hate us when they find out about this.” throughout his “hunt” and I think that is what really hurt Locke’s introduction more than his actual character.

It’s actually very sad to me, that Bungie made a very good (great even, imho) game & them Microsoft/343I messed up SO much with H4 & H5G. Sadder still what happened with Destiny.

-Jul’s death was stupid, a wasted opportunity, and poorly written. But how’s that Locke’s fault? He just followed script, swept in, and slit his throat.

-Play the Swords of Sangheilios mission again and pay attention. “I saved your life today”.

-Master Chief destroyed THREE rings … Installation 04, Installation 04b, and Installation 03 … THREE Halo rings, the Ark, Didact, Gravemind, deliver a bomb to a Covenant cruiser by hand in space, detonated a nuke by hand, etc. … he is THE badass of the universe, and Locke cracked HIS visor. The only other person to do so was the Didact. What does that say? That’d be like saying I gave Muhammad Ali a wedgie. Even if I got the piss beat out of me afterwards by Ali, I still pulled it off, didn’t I?

He said “make him badass”, these are badass things, regardless of how poor the writing is or how badly the Chief stomped him afterwards. If I tell a biker gang to “-yoink!- off”, then get stomped, that was still pretty badass of me to tell them off regardless of my stomping, right?
