How can Spartan Locke be a better character?

Well I just hope we get more Master Chief and less of that noob people call Locke.

What the hell is that thing?

Anyways, Locke is similar to what Chief was in Halo and Halo 2, a stoic supersoldier who lets his actions speak louder than his words. However, what he lacks is any really memorable lines, which Chief had quite a few of. Give him a couple cool, funny, or just plain iconic lines like Chief had in his first 3 games, or at least give him a couple comical moments.

343i’s wonderful “design” team, everyone.

> He also played soccer with Buck? What the hell more do you guys want? Everyone hated the Arbiter in Halo 2 at first too, you know. lol

I loved arbiter from halo 2 until 3. In halo 5 he is looking… Retarded - and his German voice actor had the voice of me krabbs from SpongeBob…

I don’t think people will get used to Locke like the Arbiter, because unlike Arbiter, some people fear that Locke could replace Master Chief, and because some people don’t want Master Chief replaced, people won’t like him, and would ask for Locke’s removal or death. But I don’t think Locke would replace Chief.

It could be better if he dies =D. I don’t like him, in Nightfall or Halo 5.

None of the new spartens - including Locke - left much of an impression on me.

How could people not like the arbiter he was awesome in H2 and H3

Kill him off and replace him with Buck. Done, everyone’s happy.

Give him an actual point in his character. His own motivations. People likening him to the Arbiter at this point are crazy, Locke needs a serious improvement next game.

Imagine how much more people would’ve liked the game if Buck was the main character instead of Locke.

> Not much given that Locke as he exists is already a fine character. It is pretty telling that many complaints against Locke are that he is generic yet the Halo community is able to, and seems fine, with Chief barely registering a personality until Halo 4, yet these same fans through a fit with Halo 4 because Chief didn’t spout nothing but one-liners. I have many problems with the campaign, but Osiris wasn’t one of them. You all want to sit there and tell me you didn’t notice Locke’s no nonsense approach to doing his job and skill to take down Jul 'Mdama ('Mdama’s death being a weak point with the story notwithstanding)? You want to sit there and tell me you missed the insight in Locke’s ideas on honor being something you have to earn and then see how he feels he has to prove himself to the Arbiter fully knowing his past as an ONI agent will make that difficult? You want to sit there and tell me you don’t admire his professionalism in the face of going after a legendary Spartan-II team and not being a hot-head or submissive? You want to sit there and tell me you don’t at the least give him props for his professionalism on an independent colony he knows full well the UNSC isn’t welcome on thus acts polite whenever the opportunity arises because he understand violence and bravado aren’t always the answers? Hell, you want to sit there and tell me you can’t see his trust, loyalty and, concern for his team when he allows Tanaka to guide Osiris on Meridian because she knows that colonies mindset, or when he urges his team to ignore Cortana’s juvenile ravings because he knows full well what she is doing, or when he is there to save Buck twice? Come on, can’t anybody admire that even whi Chief kicks his -Yoink- we see Locke is able to bounce back and risk his life to save Chief from Cortana’s clutches?

> There is a lot to Locke that people simply miss because they don’t want to pay attention or think anymore harder than processing catchphrases.

The point is that he wasn’t as interesting as he could have been. Him having some kind of deeply planted conflict with the Master Chief, bringing Master Chief’s loyalty under the spotlight is way more complex than what we got- which was, well, another Master Chief.

-Needs a better backstory than that terrible straight-to-dvd mini-movie.
-So a new character from scratch is already considered equal to the main man of 4 titles? I’m not buying that 343i.
-needs personality. Locke is as blank as the prometheans he fights. But atleast they are essence of former human personalities…
-He needs to have goals and a purpose. Arbiter’s was revenge but Locke is just another by-the-books chief wannabe clone.
-Did I mention he needs to have more personality? Because even Doomguy showed more personality than locke.
-Give me a reason to care about him. Otherwise the only good thing from Osiris is Buck.

Locke would be better If he goes full Kratos, Hulk, and just stay raging at all times.
Obviously there would have to be some sort of plot device to trigger him.

I think I’ll be in the minority on this one but, I actually really liked Locke in Halo 5. He exhibited many traits I find likable in a character.

He was respectful to everyone around him, his teammates, his friends, allies and even his enemies. The scene where he confronted Chief gave me goosebumps. He was calm, collected and faithful to his mission. You could tell he harbored no I’ll will towards Chief and Blue Team. He was diplomatic and tried to get Chief to return upon his own will. Remember, It was actually Chief who started the fight between the two. Even after Chief literally tried to kill him, he still attempted to work together with Chief to help stop Cortana.

Locke is also extremely brave. The man confronted 4 Spartan II Super Soldiers by himself (Lockes teammates watched from above). He held his own against the Legendary 117. He later risked his life to rescue Blue Team after they had been trapped by Cortana. He and Osiris fought through wave after wave of prometheans and three Wardens to rescue them. Locke is certainly no coward.

He is an excellent leader. He coordinated the rescue of Halsey from Jul’M’dama. He kept his Fireteam together during the battle of Sunaion. His Fireteam managed to work against the clock and rescue Blue Team, all while being berated by Cortana. He came back to save Buck from falling to his death.

He is compassionate. He felt devastated when he found out what was happening to the human colonies. How could Blue Team willingly awaken a guardian on Meridian when they knew it would devastate the planets surface, killing thousands of people. Locke even mentioned on the space elevator that those who were responsible for those deaths would be held accountable.

He is determined. Not once did failure faze him. He kept doing anything he could to advance forward and pursue the Master Chief. No obstacle was too big. Didn’t make the Guardian that Chief and Blue Team got? No worries, we’ll find our own. We’re not giving up.

Iv’e left out a lot of other content, such as his story in “Nightfall” and other events in Halo 5 but this should do. I know there are people out there who despise him but I love him. I hope he returns in Halo 6 and I hope we get to play as him or play along side him again.

I’ll play locke for a couple of missions… but I want to play chief.

I still hate that ugly vulture-face now as much as I hated him in 2004. Time did not change anything in that regard. The only difference is, as an NPC, I can at least ignore him most of the time.

There was the kernel of a good back story in Nightfall, then the rug was yanked from under the character in the game. Too cold, zero motivation other than ‘the next target’, limited plot and character development from the live screen introduction we’d received. No hint that his arc on the original Halo fragment had affected him in any way. Nothing, nada, zippo. You were left looking for a reason to connect and immerse.

People like to connect with potentially major players in the lore. There needs to be empathy, sympathy, mystery, something for them to grab onto and keep coming back for more. Next time out, I’d like to see 343 give the character handling the respect he needs to develop those links to the player/audience. As it stands, its a waste of a compelling actor and character.

Speaking of Fireteams, did you know that Spartan Thorne was going to be part of Fireteam Osiris, but they replaced him with Buck.
