How can Forerunners still be alive for Halo 4

in this video at 2:04, Cortana says “but the forerunners themselves were gone forever,”
yet in books like Primordium (spelling?) we’re told that just left the galaxy…
which one is it?
Are they extinct? Did they leave the galaxy?

Also, in the E3 video Cortana says “whatever that thing was, it wasn’t organic,” makes me think that the enemies we will fight at first won’t be living. Maybe they hold a previous forerunner’s conscience and will fight for them? It’d make sense for them to not be organic, wouldn’t get killed by the halo ring’s blast.

They just left the galaxy.

They live thanks to magic…

Not really. I don’t know. I haven’t read Primordium. They probably are alive.

The forerunners are gone, in the trailer those are promethean AIs built to protect Requim they are just using Forerunner weapons.

forerunners were BELIEVED to be extinct, for no one has ever traveled outside of out galaxy before halo 3 that we know of, but ever since the arc there were suspicions that the forerunners survived some how by building something to shield themselves from the rings blast. that shield is requiem ← spelling? so it is possible that there are forerunners left. but as we saw there are Prometheans… and there is forerunner tech on this shield world. so we never know.
