How are REQ Packs Exciting?

I’ve heard various people defend the lootboxes of Halo 5: Guardians by discussing how exciting it is to get an item they wanted, but what makes that item exciting? I just got my second Prophets’ Bane, yet I’ve never once played Halo 5: Guardians. If I can get the Arbiter’s blade just from free daily packs on Halo Waypoint, what’s special about that blade?

Before I even had an Xbox Live account, I beat Halo 3 on Legendary with a friend of mine. When we finally earned the EOD armor, that meant something to us as we had to improve at the game to prove ourselves worthy of it. I’m not the biggest fan of the EOD armor (even though I love Star Wars,) but how we unlocked it made it rewarding for me. Had we just unlocked it through random chance, what would’ve been special about it?

Really the only “worth it” unlockable items like what you say from H3 are things like the Targetmaster pistol skins and achilles armor. Even those are a near guarantee if you just grind out the game though.

I enjoy getting Helios’, Hannibal vehicles, banshees etc from packs mainly bc of how rare they are and how good they can be in a warzone game. Legendary items like the Bane are just overall more rare to receive in a pack and are pretty dang good in a game. Not the same excitement as finally getting recon in H3 ofc, but it’s something.

It’s not exciting. Problem is that people who may have gotten into gaming this generation are so conditioned to seeing lootboxes that they are only used to feeling the same “excitement” that gamblers feel. Funny how those two are the same, huh? But yeah, nothing compares to earning your rewards. Totally in the same boat as you. This “exciting” and “surprise mechanic” nonsense is just bs that companies like to use to leverage people’s addictive tendencies toward gambling so they can make money off microtransactions.

I didn’t feel any sense of pride getting any of the 10,000 unlocks that Halo 5 has until I unlocked the Achilles armor and helmet. I can’t recall the circumstances under which I unlocked all the other items because they all showed up in one pack or another. But, I still remember the nights I stayed up purely to be on H5 when I finally got Achilles (armor then helmet) in my collection. I still remember how pumped I was when I unlocked Hayabusa in Halo 3. Hopefully real unlocks like from the old days make a permanent comeback.

Words don’t anger me easily, but every time I see that “surprise mechanic” clip, it definitely incites bad thoughts. Things like that, companies calling the buyers of lootboxes “whales” so they don’t have to view them as human, etc. proves that these things are strictly there out of greed.

Yeah, no kidding. The worst bit of that is how they disguise their “dollar eyes” by pretending like
it’s all in the best interest of the gamers.

But, if you do get into H5 online, there is one thing they added last year. It has been mentioned already, but the Targetmaster skins for your Magnum are also a nice set to go for. It’s straightforward, you have to get 650 wins in all. Takes a bit of time, but every unlock makes you want the next one.

Well it can be exciting to finally get a weapon you like to use in warzone. I get excited when I see those Hannibal vehicles which are very fun to use. The problem in H5 req system is they over bloated it stuff and left practically nothing to be earned. H5 can be an exciting game to play BUT I think the word you are confusing exciting with rewarding as H5 is a very UNrewarding game. H5 is basically one giant grind as you grind out point to get packs to get unlocks, vehicles and weapons…and then you grind XP to try and reach max XP rank. Even the famed Achilles armor is just a giant team grind. The req system had potential but it was implemented very badly.

People like getting Prophet’s Bane because it’s fun to use in WZ. Gives you camo when equipped, so you can sneak around swording people. That’s why someone might fee excited to unlock a weapon like that.

However, that could be said because unlocking it randomly is the only way to use it. So there really is no other way to feel excited over it than get it in a pack. It’d be different if there was a map that spawned a Prophet’s Bane and you managed to get it.

You can get excited by spawning with it in the Super Fiesta playlist. It’s the only way to play with the Legendary REQ Weapons without having to use the cards. The Prophets Bane, Nornfang, Whispered Truth, CE Pistol, Oathsworn, and Spnkr Prime Rocket Launcher are just a few of the amazing weapons you have a chance at spawning with.

Maybe I am missing something, how are you unlocking Req packs and never played Halo 5?

You can get them through the free daily packs that Alex mentioned by opening Halo 5’s game page here on Waypoint and going to the REQ store.

Oh…then I guess I don’t understand the question. “How are Req packs exciting at all if I never play the game they are used in?”

Simple answer: “They aren’t”

The req packs are not exciting. I just liked to collect all the items. On top of that once you unlock most of the items the specialty req packs will give you Legendary XP boosts you can use to help yourself get to level 152.

The question is a simple one:

“If I don’t even have to play a game to earn rewards in it, how are those rewards even remotely worth going after? Those rewards don’t represent an overcome challenge.”

Even if you play Halo 5: Guardians, you don’t have to actually earn anything (minus a few exceptions that others have mentioned.) It’s all random chance.

The excitement would be from the anticipation of possibly getting an item that they wanted which is similar to gambling. Getting things through other methods like an achievement for example is good, but people also like getting things with minimal effort which REQ packs provide.

Ya if you don’t play Warzone, then all those unlocks are pretty much useless. I don’t play WZ myself and used to sell everything I would get, but after getting the classic helmet pack at some point to get older helmets, I stopped because I just didn’t care anymore lol. Still unlocking silvers though and haven’t gotten any RP points back yet. I only look forward to unlock armor, but even that’s not a big thing because I hate the armor design in Halo 4 and 5 lol

I would just like to know why 4 out of 5 req packs opened, gives you XP boosts for Warzone. If I’m in need of a XP boost for arena, it’s usually 3-5 packs to get it. It’s definitely not that hard to get it for Warzone though, I have hundreds of each in a constant supply :disappointed_relieved:

I don’t want RNG REQ packs to ever make a return.

I don’t think its the farming that makes them exciting imo, it’s what you get inside them that can/can not make them exciting.

Getting cool stuff is always fun, but I’m not super hyped about em. Never have been.
Might be that I unlocked everything out of em years ago tho

The Hannibal Mantis is awesome
