How 343 can improve on armor

343 seems to have a misconception about what makes armor cool. No, random polygon with stripes on it do not make me look like a badass Spartan, it makes me look like a power ranger. Something I noticed while playing Reach, Reach’s armor had PURPOSE. Side strapped ammunition, pouches and holdsters, data pads, etc. You could imagine what their use was just by looking at it. While there weren’t as many varients as there is in Halo 5, each helmet had additions that gave them depth. Here’s just a list of guidelines I feel 343 should follow to make armor special again in Halo 6.

  1. Don’t add 200 armor sets. Limit it to 30-50 and let us customize shoulder pads individually.

  2. Give it purpose. I don’t see the point of my helmet looking like a unicorn or a 300 B.C Spartan helmet (looking at you Achilles), why would a military ever produce something so ridiculous?

  3. Why does my armor look factory fresh? I know they improved a bit on it in Halo 5, but it still isn’t how it should be. Armor should be rugged, discolored, scrapes and scratches, chips and cracks, bullet holes and burn marks. I’ve been at war, I want to feel it and look it.

  4. Unlock armor through commendations. If Halo 4 had good looking, unique armor and used the same unlock system, it would have been a much more addicting game. Like LNG said, don’t give me armor through a random number generator. “Cap 2 flags in a row”, “Achieve a Rampage in matchmaking”, “Earn a perfection in multiplayer”. Those are pretty difficult, so make those unlocks for very rare armor sets.

  5. Let me SHOW OFF my armor. If I can’t show it off then there’s no point. I will hardly notice someone’s armor in the middle of a firefight, their visor color at most. Oh yeah and on the subject of visors, notice how nobody cares about Halo 4 or Halo 5 visors but everyone was coveting the visors in Reach? More doesn’t mean better, 343.

Honestly I wish they could just hire the guy who did the armor in Reach. This current guy doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Stop making us look like one quarter of a megazord might help

first just stop on armor and helmet there over 200 in each area. iwould rather have more maps.

Stop making it look like power rangers! …but honesty, just use Halo reaches system and such for armour and poof! everybody loves it!

I disagree with all of the above, if you don’t like the armor don’t wear it. I have not read any UNSC regulations of it being mandatory in War Games simulations.

There needs to be more armor like Mark IV and Centurion, these armors feel more like Halo armors should. (probably because both shoulders are different in both armors)

Well, thats what he is saying. Give him some Reach style armor than he won’t have to wear the Power Ranger stuff.

I agree with the OP. Cut the armor down to 50 sets with small amounts of customization on shoulders & forearms. I do like the Achilles stuff though. That kind of stuff is neat as features. I loved the Hayabusa armor, and would love a version of that for Jago in H5, a flaming Cinder helmet, a Glacius style armor like Helioskrill, Fulgore armor too. What bothers me is that it seems overwhelmingly goofy stuff. I don’t even know what a normal Spartan looks like anymore. I haven’t played the campaign for instance. I have no frickin idea what I am expected to see from a lore-oriented Spartan Company. Its all over the place.

If I could wear my armour from reach, and it look the exactly the same, I would!!! but I can’t… sorry but your post is pretty non constructive…

Honestly I never understood the power ranger comparison…but 343 should slap a exotic tag on armors like fotus and Helioskrill.

You’re missing a big point, The MP is simulations not In-game-real-life that’s why the armor is brand new all the time.

I understand what they wanted to do but in doing so also restricted the options for consumers of having the ability of customization in the depth that Reach gave, these “variants” of several of these armors could of been given with the option of “armors skins” or tertiary, quaternary or even quinary color options but nope. They left it at primary and secondary with variants of skins with armor sets that can’t be slightly changed.

I’m not really digging the more “action-y” armor as opposed to the stylized, almost anime-type armor of Halo 3.

You’re missing the point we don’t care we just want to look badass and cool why restrict that based on what lore?

I still don’t think men in skin tights can even be compared to Spartan 4’s but I’m normally a elite player so what do I know about practical armor?! haha

sums up what i always felt. Reach armor was the most realistic in the series. halo 5 seriously makes us look like some sorta action figures. Also, more armor should be earned than won via req packs, i remember the sense of accomplishment when i got the credits or rank needed for a particular piece of armor i wanted, way more fun that just opening packs and hoping for one which i wanted.

Armor should be rugged yea, also like mentionned, it shouldnt look new and its not exactly cheap to keep replacing armor to maintain its new look.

(halo lore has it that mjolnir armor is one of the most expensive pieces of equipment produced by humanity, i dont see them replacing armor every time u get a scratch on it)

Why not have this:

  1. Over 200 armor pieces, but with the options like helmet, chest, left shoulder, right shoulder, left arm, right arm, belt, legs, visor, and under suit (H4, H5, and all black options).

  2. Wierd armor like halo 4 and 5 FOR THE PEOPLE WHO LIKE IT and stuff like H3 Halo Reach for those type of people.

  3. Unlock system like halo reach, but not as slow and not as expensive, unlocks through commendations.

  1. I agree with you here, it’s telling that the majority of the armour is actually just retextures that add way too much noise and make the final product look messy. Fewer armour sets with a higher range of customization would be preferable.

  2. I like some of the more exotic helmets and amours, but yes, there are a couple of helmets especially that look way off proportion and have crazy protrusions(-Yoinks!- lol) on them.

  3. I think that the armour is ok in this regard, I think that a lot of visual wear and tear would just add noise and subtract definition, same as most of the alternative armour skins.

  4. Absolutely. Seriously, why did this ever change? Why were daily challenges dropped also? There is so much potential for armour that can only be unlocked through rigorous trial.

  5. It does seem a little odd that we have to dig into sub-menus to see each others armour in the lobby, it’s disappointing for sure, I felt that Reach did it best.

I think the current artists are fantastic, they certainly do a great job, I think it might be their direction or inspiration that needs changing as I think that their rendition of classic armours look fantastic.

My only point to add would be to please use default contrast settings on every set as some are way too dark and ruin colour schemes, they should all be normalized for consistency.

In the firefight tease, they all looked like power rangers. Definitely a fan of the Reachy style over the semi-manga japanesey style of 343.

Simplicity. IMO there’s way too much going on with 343’s designs. As someone else said, their style for armor is far more reminiscent of an anime mech suit than Halo.

What I liked about Bungie’s art style was that no matter how vastly different it may have been on the surface, it looked as though every armor was derived from Mark V. And with Reach, it felt more like something a military would use because each helmet, armor, and attachment served a purpose.

343 needs to understand that super soldiers can still look bada** without looking like hyper futuristic “Gundam-meets-Power Rangers” types.
